Mazda in this model year introduced its SkyActiv-G 2.0-liter engine for the i Touring and i Grand Touring trims, which boosts torque, smooths out performance, and improves highway mileage notably. The car feels lively in everyday driving situations, with responsive steering, decent cornering stability, and fewer compromises in ride comfort than many sport-oriented compacts.Inside, the Grand Touring stands out within its class: leather-trimmed seating surfaces, heated front seats, a power drivers seat, and a power moonroof all contribute to a premium sense. The Bose ten-speaker Centerpoint audio system paired with full-color navigation and a multi-information display make the interior feel well-equipped. Materials are good though not luxurious; fit and finish are solid. Visibility is excellent, and the cabin is pleasantly quiet at cruising speeds. On fuel economy, the SkyActiv system delivers results close to Mazdas claims: around 28 mpg city / 40 mpg highwaywith the automatic in sedan form. This represents a meaningful step over the previous generation for drivers who commute on highways or do a lot of cruising. The six-speed SkyActiv-Drive automatic is smooth for the most part; the six-speed manual (when present) offers an even more engaging feel though slightly lower highway numbers. There are trade-offs: power is modest (155 hp, 148 lb-ft), which means the 3i Grand Touring is not a drag-strip car. When pushed, the engine can become noisy, especially under hard acceleration. The automatics responsiveness is good but lacks the crispness of some rivals dual-clutch or more performance-oriented setups. Also, in hatchback form or with heavier loads, highway mileage drops slightly.Reliability tends to be good, and Mazdas design choiceslighter engine block, direct injection, reduced weighthelp in long-term durability when the car is maintained properly. Brake, suspension, and steering components tend to hold up, though nothing is invincible; checking service history is important.
