My Review of Beaverton Honda:
I visited Lanphere Beaverton Honda looking at a used FJ Cruiser. I was in the market, went and test drove the car and then informed them that I had no trade and wanted to know what they would sell the car for as the "listed" price was of course too high. It was a Saturday and I wanted to visit several dealerships which I explained before my test drive so I just wanted to get a "bottom line" price on several used FJ's and I intended to make a purchase a couple of days later. After 40 minutes at the dealership, the sales manager would not give me a price, but only wanted to know what I would pay him for the car. Frustrated, I decided to leave and informed my salesman that I was leaving and if they wanted to give me a price to write it down on a card and give it to me. He came back from the sales manager with a card where he had written down the "asking price" listed on the car. If this was their final price, the salesman could have told me that 40 minutes prior, and I would not have wasted my time test driving the car.
2 days later, I sent an e-mail to the Dealership GM telling of my frustration with his sales force, and made him an offer to purchase the car for $21,500 if he was interested in selling it. The amount was based on Edmunds TMV for the car in Excellent Condition, even though the FJ would not qualify as "Excellent" as it needed new tires. The GM responded to my e-mail with an explanation of how they determined the asking prices for their cars and included several attachments explaining how much they had into the car. He sent several listings of auction values of FJ's, however, on another attachment paperwork showed that he did not purchase the FJ at auction, and he took it in on a trade. According to his paperwork, he gave more on trade than the retail value of the car in "excellent" condition at Edmunds, com and he almost gave the NADA Retail price on trade. Not sure how many dealerships actually give retail value for trade in ??? He also told me that they had done over $1000 of repair/detailing work to the car. I find it harder to believe that you would give retail value on a trade-in on a car that needed $1000 worth of repairs. As I looked further at the paperwork which he sent me, I realized that he actually billed himself for the repairs, so he is up-charging himself for the purpose of bookkeeping paperwork. His paperwork, also showed that the car had been on his lot for about 3.5 months ...........probably a good sign that the car is overpriced ???
After sending me all of this documentation trying to convince me that he had over $23,000 into the car, he finished by saying, and I quote:
"If you are interested still I will sell the FJ for $21500 and you can contact me at 503-572-6671 to discuss further."
I replied to his e-mail saying that I was willing to purchase the FJ for this price and asked when I should come by and who I should ask for. After not receiving a response to my e-mail (VERY UNPROFFESSIONAL), a couple of days later, I called Mr. Lennard to get a response to my e-mail as I was interested in purchasing the FJ. At this time, he told me that he couldn't sell me the FJ for the price he said he could but he could sell it to me for $23,500 if I wanted it. I then told him goodbye and hung up, but as I thought more about this, I couldn't figure out why he didn't respond to my e-mail, other than this was just a "salesman trick" to get me back into the Dealership. Had I actually gone to the Dealership to purchase the car, to then be told that they would not honor the price he gave me I would have gone Ballistic.
It is obvious to me that Bob Lanphere Auto Group operates under SUSPECT business practices, and does not place value on the time or feelings of their potential customers, and places NO value in term honesty. Be very careful when dealing with the family of Lanphere Auto Group.
