I would like to provide all of the figures that were discussed with the customer and let readers draw their own conclusion on what a “fair deal” would be. The customer came in with printouts of KBB figures, so I will use KBB figures in my explanation. Purchasing vehicle: 2012 Jeep Patriot Limited FWD with 19,810 miles. KBB Trade = $16881 - KBB Retail = $20091 Trading-in: 2008 Lexus IS 250 Sedan Manual with 47,862 miles KBB Trade = $16841 - KBB Retail = $24726 Customer’s vehicle was in nice condition with the exception of slight body damage on driver’s side, two curb rash wheels and the fact that it was a manual, cuts down our selling population. Damage would have needed paint work, but no body work. It looked like he had scraped it on a parking pole or something of that height. ($1500 estimation on paint damage, let alone the fact that it would be a Lexus with previous paint work.) Lexus buyers can be very particular, and rightfully so! Here are the proposed figures that we presented the customer with: Sales Price: $19750 Trade Value: $16000 Trade Difference: $3750 The customer stated unless we gave him $750 back, he would not trade. I hinted to the customer that we could give him more for his trade to match KBB trade-in, but we were not close on his demand for $750 back. He claimed that we should trade him “wholesale to wholesale” or “retail to retail.” I tried to explain to him that per KBB definitions that is not how they were set up. He then claimed that I was trying to use “the oldest trick in the book” to cheat him. Recently, KBB has set up their own buying program to offer customers and instant offer to buy their trade directly. We love this feature, because it takes the dealership out of the equation and it gives the customer a third-party value on their vehicle. Our salesman walked the customer through this process and was quoted Trade-in Market Place® value of $13468. This value only frustrated the customer more even though he was the one bringing up KBB. We at Community Chrysler do not hold a grudge with this customer. We understand that we will not always come to terms with every customer. Additionally, this customer has attempted to leave a negative review for us on multiple reputation sites. We checked his Yelp! profile to find that he has never left a positive review.
