My Review of Foreign Motors West BMW:
After searching for months looking for the right Certified Pre-Owned X3, we finally found it online at Herb Chambers/FMW. Everything about the vehicle was right and I placed a $500 credit card deposit on the vehicle to hold it until we could get down there to check it out the next evening. We were fully prepared to buy it on that visit.

We live and work in northern NH, nearly three hours away, and when we started out for FMW after work, it was raining, snowing, freezing, foggy, etc. so we called the salesperson and said we had to call it off until the next night. The next night came and we leave work early, drive three hours to learn that they had sold the vehicle out from under us!! I was BS to say the least, but what prompted me to smear these guys was the cavalier attitude of the obnoxious Pre-Owned sales manager who told me "hey, it's the end of the month and I need to make numbers....... I get a hundred people a day who want me to hold cars for them and I'm not losing sales."

So folks, it's a numbers game with these guys and if you don't like the treatment you get, move over and get out of the way because there are plenty of other stiffs out there in metro Boston they can prey on. This just reaffirms why I have purchased cars from private sales for all these years...... you meet some really nice people and don't have to deal with these creeps.

i changed my mind. . after going over with glen in service, my car was explained in full detail. apparently the new x5 bmw is so smart that humans cannot figure it out and it does stuff that no one knows about so of course, i think it is not working. glen sat with me for hours showing me details and after that i felt confident. so my last experience was better than my first 2.

I am dissatisfied. When purching the BMW they boast loaner cars and each and every time i wind up with an enterprise rental, not a BMW as they boast. This is false advertising and I am not happy at all with that part of the service.

My Review of Foreign Motors West BMW:
I called their parts department at 4:55pm today to ask about a radiator clip. After being told it was in stock, I told the parts rep that I would be right there and that I was only 5 minutes away. I arrived at 5:01pm to find the parts department closed and all of their reps gone for the day. WTF! The lady at the front desk informed me that they were just purchased by Herb Chambers and have changed their hours. They used to close at 6pm. Don't you think the parts rep should have mentioned the VERY RECENT change in hours when I called 5 MINUTES before closing and said I WOULD BE RIGHT THERE!?!?!

My Review of Foreign Motors West BMW:
I am an older BMW fanatic having owned 4 different e30s, 2 e34s and an e23. The folks at FMW are so pleasant to deal with and spot on with their diagnosis that I drive 40 miles out of my way to bring vehicles to them. Correct diagnosis without just throwing parts at a problem are what makes the techs at FMW better than all other dealerships which I've been exposed to. I love my older cars and feel fortunate that FMW is willing to pleasantly work with someone who doesn't just bring in warranty work.

My Review of Foreign Motors West BMW:
I visited this dealership, good for you look at BMW and Mercedes (They are turning to Herb Chamber now). I want to talked about Mercedes side. The salesman was not bad, the top mgr was not bad, but, I had a chance talked to the 1st tier sales mgr, it was a bad bad experience - He tried to make me sign the deal, and I am negotiating the price.....I am sure, I am polite and only requesting what I am hoping......guess what, when I am still a potential buyer still showing great interest, the 1st tier sales mgr turned his back to me, and not even pay attention to me anymore - what if I signed the deal, and he made the money from me, will he still talk to me if I have question or problem? Make your best guess.

You sure know Mercedes makes good car, and customers are paying for that and also for the quality of services, not for kicking(fooling) around.

Dealers, in the highend sales/market, service quality spells for the "money" you can make.

*Quality of customer services* means more to me than those few thousand dollars!!

My Review of Foreign Motors West BMW:
Foreign Motors West is simply the worst car dealership I have ever experienced in 26 years of owning a car. People, you must avoid this place altogether. They are crooks (especially the service dept.). I bought my M3 coupe there in '97 and took the car for repairs/maintenance even after the warranty expired (in my case after 2.5 years). I was chagred thousands of dollars for work either not done correctly, or NOT DONE AT ALL ! My suspicion is that they go by a timetable/chart for each repair. For example, for replacing an oxygen sensor their chart shows (hypothetically speaking) 45 mins. If they finish the job within that period, they still charge you the price shown on their chart (i.e. as if they worked for the entire 45 mins). If they don't finish the job within 45 mins, they stop there, tell you the repair was completed and still charge you their exorbitant costs (whether the repair was done, done partially, or not done at all). And they move on to the next car. The worst experience I had was when there was a blockage somewhere in the air system, so air was hardly coming out of the vents. They told me that both the thermostat and the AC fan had to be replaced, total cost almost $1,900. The diagnosis didn't make sense to me, so I didn't have it fixed. After 3 weeks of normal driving, the air flow came back and worked fine ever since ! (prob. some dirt or something else blocking the flow somewhere). I wrote a letter to the Cust. Service manager (they wouldn't put me through to talk to him), received no reply in 3-4 weeks, wrote a second letter, then about 2 months later received a letter back saying that their diagnosis was correct, but enclosed a $50 service rebate coupon ! These people should be in jail, not in business. For the last 2.5 years I have been taking my M3 to Autobahn East in Lexington. Terrific service, friendly, very good technically, about half the cost of the FMW crooks and above all ... honest !

Mediocre service dept competency. Diagnosis of an onboard computer "TRANS PROG FAILURE" error message took 48 hours (hence, I needed to rent a car for 2 days) to complete. The result was "We can't find the cause or the problem?". They reset the computer and everything has been fine since. The only good thing was the cost - 1 hour labor at $120.

I have been buying and servicing my BMWs with FMW for almost 7 years. The integration of the service advisor and the actual service area is excellent. I find them very helpful, proactive, and willing to answer many questions. The car is always returned clean, they provide loaners, and they fix it right. I also belong to the BMW CCA which helps to educate owners about technical issues. BMWs are technical marvels, and as a result of cutting edge technology, require more care and repair.

My Review of Foreign Motors West BMW:
Foreign Motors West are the biggest bunch of crooks around. They lure you in under the guise of a Certified Pre-owned Warranty and then when you need service done, surprisingly nothing is covered. I bought a 2001 X5 that was in that shop every month for the almost 2 years I had it. Finally my entire electrical system went and they told me it was "because of too much rain" and it was not covered. After dropping $2500 to fix that I decided to get a Lexus! Smartest move I made. I would NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER recommend them. Lance the service managaer is rude and degrading to women.

My Review of Foreign Motors West BMW:
I bought 3 BMWs (Z models) from FMW over a 10 year period. The cars were fine, but I would not recommend this dealership at all. They say that they are employee-owned and they care, but basically, they don't! I was a great customer, and no one there knew me, no one returned calls, and so on. In particular, I would have my car in for service, and no one called to say when it was finished. On numerous occasions, it was not ready when promised, and then they gave me an awful rental car, with ME having to do the driving back and forth. Their salespeople are average at best, and the sales manager hides behind his desk, pretending to give you a good deal. I love BMWs, but I'd strongly recommend that you avoid this dealership.

My Review of Foreign Motors West BMW:
The car: a new $40,000 BMW 3 series convertible

The problem: bigtime roof rattles from Day 1

The real problem: After shuttling the car back and forth for four months of failed repairs, FMW kept the car for two weeks, purportedly to replace the roof components. When I arrived to pick up the car the service manager informed me that one of FMW's "ace" technicians had smashed the car while driving on the dealer lot. The car's left front end had major damage. I demanded a new car and was told FMW would swap for ..........an additional $5,000! The car was six months old.

The solution: After getting blown off by BMW North America, I hired an attorney who threatened Chap.93 A and lemon law litigation. FMW finally and reluctantly coughed up most of my
investment. The dealings with FMW were the worst consumer experience of my life.

The moral: never buy overrated, overpriced German automobiles, and, to paraphrase Herb Chambers, don't buy from dirtbag dealerships.

My Review of Foreign Motors West BMW:
Rude, condescending treatment from the secretary to the salesperson, Link(?). First, you can never get ahold of anyone in sales or service when you call. They put you on hold and then it rings back to the secretary after 5 minutes of waiting. She now doesn't recall that you have been on hold. Laughable. And when you are physically there, they just hang around eating food and gossiping. Sales guy is the worst. Sizes you up and quickly dismisses you if he doesn't think you are well-off financially. Please do NOT buy from FMW! Go to Herb Chambers or Norwood, or anywhere else. Also, the service department tries, but often causes more problems than they solve.

My Review of Foreign Motors West BMW:
Foreign Motors West is an absolute predator. I can only warn of the unscrupulous sales routines that are employed there.

Among the long list of devious practices, they handed me a false Carfax report (I purchased my own online that was different than the "clean" one they gave me).

They are experts at belittling the consumer; how can a BMW dealership still play the coy cat-and-mouse games of the past?

I was fortunate enough not to purchase a car from there. My gut told me not to, and my instincts were correct. If I had purchased the car that the salesman was pushing on me I would have certainly regretted it.

My Review of Foreign Motors West BMW:
In Dec 2003 I bought a used BMW from Joe Santa Maria at Foreign Motors West. Joe was a typicaly slimy car salesman. During the negotiation process Joe told me the 2001 325xi I was purchasing had a clean driving history with no major accidents and was a "Certified Pre-Owned BMW," that all such cars had no meaningful problems in their pasts, and this car passed a rigorous inspection. Once we finalized pricing, the CarFax report informed me the car in fact had been in a major accident that had required significant repairs. I was shocked. A complete lie.

After finally purchasing the car, the dealership did not send in the updated registration for my new car. Several months later my car was impounded by the Cambridge Police because the registration had not been properly transferred.

I will never buy from this dealership or from this salesman/sales manager/GM again. Go to Herb Chambers in Boston or BMW Gallery in Norwood. (also see negative Boston Globe article on this dealership Jan 21, 2007).

Your entire post is questionable, mine is at least public and court record.

Foreign Motors West DID provide me with a carfax report when I was shopping the car, however it had NO INCIDENTS ON IT..

During the litigation process, FMW provided my attorney with the REAL carfax report (foolishly) that clearly lists an accident and a police accident case #..........

I , my attorney, FMW attorney and The Boston Globe are in possesion of it...............

If you would like one let me know.

My Review of Foreign Motors West BMW:
FMW: Quite literally the finest automobile dealership I have ever dealt with. And that's saying a lot. I have bought and sold over 50 cars in the past 45 years, including cars for my wife, family, myself. I'm pretty good at it, to the point where I have even gone and bought cars for friends. Previously I thought that BMW of Peabody was the best BMW store in MA, but having purchased a used, certified BMW last June ('06), I'd say that FMW has re-set the bar even higher. I also happen to be very active with the BMWCCA (car club of America), Boston Chapter, but am in NO WAY affiliated with FMW. FMW's reputation among club members is extremely high, but the general assumption is that this level of high end service comes at a price. They seldom try and be a value leader, less likely to be aggressive in their discounts. They don't have to be, as their service and integrity is rated so high. Meanwhile, I just read the hatchet job the Boston Globe published today (21 Jan '07). About the only thing FMW did wrong was not literally force her to get a CarFax. And while the use of CarFax in 2004 was not as universal as it is now, FMW should have volunteered this information (when I purchased a used car there in June the first thing they gave me was a CarFax.) Having said that, some blame has to be on the consumer here, as she should have pulled a CarFax herself, or asked the dealer to do so (I have never been declined this request, at no charge, and if they hesitate, RUN AWAY!). Meanwhile, the "rules of engagement" under warranty claims are that you have to give the dealer a reasonable chance to fix the problem; the laws are pretty clear on this. FMW's reputation, well earned, has been tarnished when there is no evidence to suggest that they would not have done whatever it takes to fix the vehicle. This is something that they are not only required by law to do, but have done so with such regularity and professionalism that their standing in the BMW enthusiast's community is second to none. At the end of the day the settlement was no where near enough to compensate for her time value of money, legal fees, stress and aggravation, etc., and FMW now gets back a car that's three years older and a black eye in the press. No one wins. If the plaintiff had simply followed the state-mandated proceedures for warranties (among the most consumer-friendly in the country...don't try this in NH!) she would have been driving and enjoying a beautiful car instead of filing lawsuits and appeals. What a waste.

My Review of Foreign Motors West BMW:
I brought my 40,000 mile Mercedes Benz to this dealership in early 2005. I asked them to check the transmission. They advised me that I would need a new transmission for many thousands. They advised me against driving the car. This seemed wrong to me so told them to put it back together and I would get another opinion. I took the car to a transmission specialist who advised me that there was nothing wrong with the transmission and I have been driving it for two year since with no problem.

I write this now since I read the story in today's (Jan 21 Business Section) Globe, and it made me angry all over again. I was lucky.

Worst dealership ever. I live in Northborough and work in Framingham. I brought my BMW here because they said they will give me a loaner for the day. I dropped it off one day (scheduled appointment) and they said they could not give me a loaner because I did not buy the car from them. Regardless of what I said they said NO. I left the car there for the day and came back at 4:30. The guy said they have not brought my car in yet. I said fine and drove it off the lot. I have been happy with Wagner BMW in Shrewsbury but thought I try these guys out since they are 5 minutes away from my office.

My Review of Foreign Motors West BMW:
So within 5,000 miles I hit a big pothole and my tire bubbled so I brought it to these guys.
So first they come in and tell me I need to change a tire. Fine
Then while changing the tire they tell me I need a new wheel - OK fine whatever.
THEN while changing the wheel I need new struts.
But they fail to tell me when I change a wheel on an AWD you really should change them in pairs (at least) - fortunately I did some research so I knew that.

So it costs me quite a bit - which isn't the problem - just how they got around to telling me. You should do the full exam before telling them the details.

Anyway then after I drive it away, it has this strange squeek - turns out they didn't fully attach a "roll bar" (not sure what that was).
Not a great experience! So although I liked them *A LOT* for the purchase of the vehicle - the service dept is pretty poor.

If you had asked me a year ago, I would have said a good dealership, however now I would NEVER recommend them. They are the worst. We had an older BMW (1997) that we were debating whether to trade-in. We went to the service department and were told we had about $2000 worth of work, but then the car shoud ride like new. We put the $2000 in and it NEVER worked the same again. We brought the car back in 3 weeks later (some of the original work was never done) and surprise surprise we had $2000 more work to be done. They expressed no remorse over this. They did offer to get us "a good deal" on our next purchase from them or a bit of a discount on the new work. Give me a break. We went to another dealership and bought a Mercedes. We lost our $2000.

They are lucky we did not sue them.

My Review of Foreign Motors West BMW:
Usually I submit positive reviews. I had experience with Chrysler, Mazda and Lexus dealerships. Foreign Motors West was the worst. Among other things I asked to get headlights adjusted - aim. They were aiming too high, the right one higher than the left one. After I had picked up the car, I have not noticed any change. The service rep insisted that the original aim was too low, so they adjusted higher. Scheduled another appointment to give them a chance. Asked to come in the afternoon, was told that they were too busy. At this point notified the rep that I would submit a negative feedback. Did adjustment myself. Overall, the dealership looks worse than Chrysler, Lexus is totally in a different league. I feel that the rep lied to me several times.

This place is a nightmare. My certified BMW was delivered with a crack in the windshield that was supposed to have been fixed. It was also dirty inside and has the wrong type of license plates. No apologies.

I had a lot of problems with the suspension and top on the car and every visit for service was a nightmare. Everytime they looked at something they charged "diagnostic fees" even they didn't fix it and regardless of if their diagnosis was even correct (and it usually wasn't). I tried battling these charges through my credit card company but FMW threatened me with a letter and collection. I finally took it to an independent garage in Belmont and they fixed all the problems first time.

I would *NEVER* recommend FMW to anyone not even an enemy if I had any.

By contrast I was I Palm Beach on vacation and visited a dealership there. By the time I had looked at the first car a salesman came and introduced himself. He would have had a sale if I lived there. I have mentioned this to several people and told them to check this guy out.

My Review of Foreign Motors West BMW:
Brake Lining light lit up at 35k. Did an inspection 1 at the same time. Replaced rotors and pads under warranty. Told them I was hearing noise in the front end from every little bump. They replaced both front sway bar links. Told them I was hearing static on AM when I step on thhe brakes. They installed an additional ground wire (per bulletin). Told them the hesitation in the acceleration was bugging me and they reprogrammed the EGS with new software.

I dropped it at 7:30 and it was ready at 5 just as they said it would be. The handling is vastly improved, and the 3.0 seems like a different beast with the new transmission program.
