My Review of Valley Stream Hyundai-Isuzu:
Hyundai Sonata 2008, Limited 4 Cyl, Leather/Sunroof
Valley Stream Hyundai.
Purchased March 08 Price paid OTD: $21,020
I had been in touch via internet with 2 dealers. Earlier I had gone to a dealer in Brooklyn and was completely shaken by the experience. All that guy wanted to know was my current payment and push financing on me. I asked for a calclulator and he informed me that none was available! I left the Brooklyn dealer minutes later.
I was looking to pay cash for a ncw car. At Valley Stream, they were responsive and polite and the numbers seemed fine. The sales people are nice and did not try to push any other services or financing. Though the color I originally requested and was assured available, it was not. But I liked what they offered me.
I thought I had gotten a full quote from the dealer as follows:
PRICE + SALES TAX - REBATE + DMV FEES.
When the time to sign the contract I noticed a pre-printed amount for $395 as an "ADMINISTRATIVE FEE." I questioned the amount but, nevertheless, signed and left a deposit of $2000 on a credit card. Interestingly, I did not get a copy of the contract. Who signs a contract for such a major purchase and does not get a copy? What I should have done was walk out immediately. But the sales people I dealt with are quite charming and I did want the car. Later, the more I thought about it the angrier I became. First about the price, then about being fooled.
I picked up the car a few days later and made an issue of the fee. I spoke to the sales manager, Carl, who at first was adament about the fee. I was unsure of my rights but I felt that I could have legitimately cancelled the deal. But as I said earlier, I wanted the car. And I felt that the price was right. Soon, the sales person informed me that the ADMIN FEE would be reduced by $150. I paid for the car as above.
To sum up: I feel I did my homework on the price and it was good timing to get a rebate. A similiar Accord or Altima or Camry would have cost thousands more. What I failed to do was research on how to buy a new car and what to expect from a new car dealer. Also, I should NOT have been negotiating alone with the dealer. A friend to accompany me and discuss any issues arising would have been most helpful. What I have learned from this experience is do your homework and don't let yourself be manipulated. And don't go alone to a dealer. Get a price, leave a deposit on a credit card, get a copy of the contract and come back to pay. Shop, compare and research. Drive safe!
