I ended up buying a brand new Passat GT from Molle VW, a dealership I didn't even know existed and I happened to stumble onto while perusing the internet. It was obvious they were a smaller VW dealership, but they happened to have the car I was interested in looking at and they were close to home, so I went. Once there I was given a long test drive, left alone with my wife and vehicle an extended time and experienced friendly, well informed staff and no sales tactics pressure. I told them I wanted to come back and drive the car again in a couple weeks, and they let me walk out with a handshake and no sales tactics or pressures whatsoever. I did come back in a couple weeks and ended up buying the car. Negotiations were just as laid back and easy as the process had been up to that point. Easily the most pleasant car buying experience I have had in years.
I have been to the VW superstore in Lees Summit and I can tell you there are big differences. First off, the advertised discounted price at Molle is actually the vehicle starting price, try that at LS you will be disappointed. LS is high pressure, strong arm sales outfit too.
In the end Molle sold me the VW I wanted for a whopping $4,000 less than LS wanted, and they still gave me low private book retail for my trade. I haven't traded a car to a dealer in over 20 years but there was no reason not to with the deal they offered. And it was a pleasant process to boot.
I have no experience with the service department whatsoever at this time so no comment there.
