BUYER BEWARE. I made the mistake of buying a 72 El Camino from Gateway Classic Cars of Tampa online. I'm pretty sure they had an office-wide belly laugh afterward.
Their pictures were of course all slick, shiny, and pretty. They didn't bother to disclose the paint had major orange peel until it was already on a truck headed my way. Then when it got to my house the driver gets it off the trailer and into my driveway. I sign the bill of lading, and he takes off. I proceed to take off in the direction of a car wash and made it all of 150 yards when it dies. I had to have it towed to a garage. They found that the carburetor was junk and completely flooding so badly that the crankcase was full of gas.
After a new carb, it was still cutting out and backfiring. They found that the electronic ignition was wired incorrectly. That had to be fixed.
Then I find out that even though it was advertised as having air conditioning, it did not work.
So to date I'm out an additional $1300 not to mention upcoming air conditioning work, and paint job. I haven't driven it ten miles yet.
If you choose to look at one of their cars, do so with a very critical eye. As a matter of fact I would advise you to look elsewhere. I envision all of these guys sitting around in cheap polyester plaid suits.
I purchased a 1989 Buick Riviera from Gateway Classic cars of Tampa, I was assured by the salesman Harry Williams that the vehicle was in good condition and everything worked as it should. After taking possession of the vehicle the engine did not start and had to be jumped. I was told it needed a new battery and further inspection uncovered the fact that the wiring harness coverings under the hood was missing and bare. The radio, power antenna and AC did not work. I was also informed that the hydraulic engine mount was broken. When I drove the vehicle the transmission shifted extremely hard especially in reverse. I was told that it would need a rebuilt or replacement transmission at a cost of thousands of dollars. The vehicle was in such poor condition that it should have been scrapped because the cost of repairs exceeded its value. These people are xxxxxxxx and I would never recommend doing business with them.
I worked at Gateway for 6 years. I put in my 2 weeks notice on 2/8/2020. Till this day no one has contacted me yet. I quit because I was being treated with disrespect for a whole year by my co worker Johnny Lane and management refused to do anything about it. People who have worked for this company for 6, 8 and 10 years have quit because the way they run this company. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. Your boss does not care about anything but themselves. I had customers cuss me out and hang up on me because management refuses to answer to customers.
Be careful working with this company as it is going downhill quick! Once Gateway sell's the car for the consignor, it used to take 1 week to pay the seller, now it is taking anywhere from 3-5 weeks to get them paid.
Tip- get the vehicle inspected
Expect to do repairs, some minor, some major. These are old vehicles, just like any other old piece of machinery . If you already own one, you know it in need of something all the time. It's part of the old car hobby, don't blame the dealer, hire someone qualified to determine if it's good or bad, before you buy it, that's right, that too costs money. While they may look new, that does not mean they are new, mechanically. Better yet, just buy a new car and polish that.
Johnny Lane had outstanding customer service. I was more or less in there to check out a few classic cars, was really unsure of purchasing that day. He provided me with the knowledge, honesty and great service that is hard to come by. I would highly recommend checking out Gateway Classic cars. Because of Johnny I will refer people to check out Gateway.
Came in and saw Dustin and Johnny in the Tampa showroom. Had been talking to them both for days about the car. Dustin got me what the total cost was going to be on the car got the car prep and ready for us. It was a very easy experience and the vette is awesome! Will be going back to see them again for my next one.
