1964 Pontiac GTO

The 1964 GTO was not its own model. It was an option package on the Pontiac Tempest LeMans, and that is exactly what the car you are looking at is. The idea was hatched in early 1963 when a small team of Pontiac engineers led by John Z. DeLorean realized the 389 cubic inch V8 from the full-size Bonneville would drop straight into the midsize Tempest. A week after the first conversation, they were doing burnouts in a prototype. GM had a strict rule prohibiting engines over 330 cubic inches in midsize cars. DeLorean broke the rule anyway, convinced that the car would sell, and proved himself right immediately.
