Ya, we understand the frustration and apologize that a processing charge is not appreciated. There is a common misconception that car dealers make tons of money and "rip" people off. The average Chrysler dealer this year makes less than 1% net as percentage of sales. In fact, an overwhelming amount of Chrysler dealers (approximately 30%) are not profitable this year. When you put that into perspective that technicians need years of training, several 10s of thousands in tools, 100s of thousands of dollars in equipment to fix vehicles the margins are not as great as perceived. That said, we have a choice of raising our $175 door rate (which by the way is one of the lowest in Columbus) or cut costs. Where just 5 years ago we were paying approximately $7000-$8000 in merchant fees, most recently our average monthly fees exceed $12,000 per month in credit card fees. The processing companies might be an area where the average consumer should shift their frustration. There is no surcharge on cash or debit cards. We have sent out several emails, posted the surcharge around the dealership, and it also is displayed on our website. Many folks use their credit cards to gain points, flights, cash back, etc...and they can continue to do so. For those that have limited funds available we also offer a payment plan that does not have a surcharge so there are many additional options. We did our research to ensure that a lofty percentage of retail operations have a similar surcharge (again only on credit cards). This is our way to make sure the business can still survive and we can pay our hard working employees the income that they deserve. I again apologize that you do not see it this way Sts970 but I think you will find we are not the only ones and understand why we do it. -Justin Harmon (General Manager)
