My experience with CarMax was mixed. The salesperson and manager at the Albany location were excellent. The manager personally followed up with me and has been professional, responsive, and genuinely helpful throughout the process. I appreciate the effort he has made to resolve problems that were not of his making. Unfortunately, the problems originated with CarMax's centralized system and inaccurate vehicle information. Before shipping the truck, I specifically called to confirm that it had an integrated trailer brake controller, could tow 10,800 lbs., and had no bad odors. I first spoke with the AI assistant and was then transferred to a representative who confirmed all three. None of that turned out to be correct. The truck is actually rated for 8,500 lbs. and does not have the integrated brake controller—the two features that were important to why I purchased the truck. The website also listed the incorrect towing capacity. What made the experience particularly frustrating was that I could not speak directly with the CarMax location where the truck was located or where it came from. I repeatedly had to go through the centralized call center, where representatives asked for my information but often could not answer technical questions about the vehicle and, in this case, provided incorrect information. Even after purchasing the truck, I couldn't simply call the originating store to resolve questions about it. The Albany team has done a good job trying to make things right, including an immediate refund on my shipping fees and agreeing to pay for an aftermarket brake controller. However, the inaccurate information and difficulty communicating with knowledgeable people added significant time, expense, and frustration to what should have been a straightforward purchase. Bottom line: I had a very good experience with the Albany CarMax manager and staff, but a frustrating experience with CarMax's centralized customer-service system and inaccurate vehicle information. I would encourage CarMax to improve the accuracy of its listings and give customers a way to speak directly with knowledgeable staff at the stores handling their vehicles. More
