They lure you in with attractive “as is” pricing and then try to upsell you with hidden, “mandatory” add-ons at the last minute.I was interested in a car they had just reduced to $54,699. They even called to tell me about the price drop. I agreed to buy it at that price and was given a breakdown including taxes, registration, and a documentation fee — totaling around $60,000. I put down a deposit based on that number and scheduled an appointment to finalize the purchase. When I met with the finance manager, Eduardo, he said he had “good news” — the vehicle had been certified. I never asked for this, nor was it ever mentioned before. What he didn’t say upfront was that they were charging me almost $4,000 extra for it, even though Genesis only charges $1,500 to certify this model. He rushed me through the paperwork on an iPad, had me initial quickly (sometimes even doing it for me), and didn’t clearly explain what I was signing. When I realized that the additional fees were over $10,000 and that my loan amount was over $55,000, I asked why the total was so high. He claimed it wasn’t — but the math didn’t lie. I had agreed to buy the car “as is,” put $10,000 down, and expected to finance about $50,000 after taxes and fees as agreed upon. Instead, he slipped in the extra certification and other junk fees. When I said I didn’t want the certification, he insisted it was mandatory and the car couldn’t be “uncertified.” That is absolutely false. Upon further investigation, I learned that certification is an optional dealer add-on and that adding such fees after advertising an “as is” price is a bait-and-switch tactic, which is illegal under both federal and Connecticut consumer protection laws. Dealers must advertise transparent, all-in pricing — certification cannot suddenly be added after a deal has been made. When I questioned their practices, the finance manager became defensive, talked over me, and twisted the truth. I offered to pay the certification fee at cost ($1,500) just to move forward, but management refused and canceled the deal entirely.
