Volvo Safety Hypocrisy: My 4-Year-Old Child with autism was placed in a vehicle with a gun I bought a Volvo XC90 for my family mostly because of Volvo’s safety reputation and its message that “Safety is was placed in a vehicle with a gun I bought a Volvo XC90 for my family mostly because of Volvo’s safety reputation and its message that “Safety is our superpower.” We use this car mainly to transport my four-year-old son, who is on the autism spectrum. On January 12, 2026, my XC90 broke down, and I brought it to Gunther Volvo Cars Coconut Creek for repair. The dealership gave me a loaner vehicle. What I did not know was that an unsecured gun was sitting inside that loaner —left there by the previous customer about 11 days earlier. My son rode in that vehicle. The next day, January 13, 2026, I returned the loaner to the dealership. They reissued the same loaner back to my family — again with the same gun still inside. My son rode in it again. On January 14, 2026, I returned the loaner again. About 108 minutes later, the dealership called and asked me if the gun was mine. Coconut Creek Police responded and removed the gun. The police later traced the firearm to a previous customer. This is not just a mistake. A loaner vehicle should be checked before and after every customer. In this situation, it appears that a basic safety sweep failed four times. What made it even worse is that, on the police body-camera video, a service manager confirmed that loaners are checked before and after each customer. But the gun had been sitting in that vehicle for 11 days before it was issued to my family. On the same video, a dealership manager told police the gun was “just more than likely” mine. The manager knew or should have known that the gun was not mine. Police then questioned me by phone. I reported this safety failure to Volvo Car USA because this happened inside the Volvo-authorized service and loaner experience. Volvo’s response was basically that the dealer is separate and that Volvo does not control dealership loaner inspections, preparation, custody, or turnover. Then, just four days later, Volvo mailed me marketing material sending me back to the same dealership — calling it the “trusted team” and an “important step in your safety prep.” The same mailer said, “Service is part of staying safe” and “our fleet of new Courtesy vehicles”. That is why I truly believe this is #VolvoSafetyHypocrisy. “Trusted team” when they are selling service. “Separate dealer” when accountability starts. After this experience, Volvo’s “Safety is our superpower” message feels very different to me. It feels like the safety promise applies to the metal of the car — not to the real moments when families like mine actually experience Volvo at the dealership. And “For life. For lives. For living.” now feels, at least in my situation, more like: “For collecting the safety premium.” I am sharing this so other Volvo families remember what Volvo says about itself: "The premiumness of our products is safety… a massive value added." That is the promise we paid for. But based on what happened to my family, the reality is this: - No safety at any authorized Volvo dealership is guaranteed by Volvo; - If harm comes to your family at — or because of — an authorized dealership, Volvo will not accept responsibility; - Volvo's "Safety Superpower" is, in the end, a standard manufacturer warranty on the metal — not on the moments we experience with our families at a dealership. That is what we actually got when we bought a Volvo. Please share this story with every Volvo owner you know — and with anyone considering a Volvo — so the next decision to buy a Volvo is made with the full picture, not just the marketing. Every detail is documented. More
I actually left happy! That hasn’t happened much when leaving car dealerships! I got the exact car I wanted, color and everything, and Yasmeen was patient and informative.
