My wife and I were very happy with our Honda Barn experience and with our salesman, Chris Boylan. First, my experience with Chris with excellent and I would highly recommend him. In a business in which one’s living depends (to an extent) on not being completely transparent with customers, my sense would highly recommend him. In a business in which one’s living depends (to an extent) on not being completely transparent with customers, my sense is that Chris toes as close as he realistically can to the “integrity zone.” I observed times when his approach appeared to honor a top rule of business : “Sacrifice short term profits in favor of long term market share.” Because I got the sense that Chris was watching out for my interests (again, as much as he could given the nature of the car sales), I was prepared to recommend him to others even if I hadn’t bought a car from him. Funny how being honorable is also the smart business move – too many overlook this. Chris also spent a lot of time with me going over features and explaining information, more than was required. He made sure I had a good experience. My experience with Honda Barn, on the other hand, was not positive. Here are three reasons from least important to most important : 3) This is so *minor* and may not even matter, but I did experience long wait times to get to financing and for the car to be ready. It honestly didn’t bother me at all – it could have just been that one day or maybe it’s just the reality of buying a car. I’m only mentioning it here in case others have experienced this issue and believe it to be a weakness. 2) Honda Barn doesn’t list prices on their web site, forcing you to call them, enter email info, or simply wait until store hours to get answers. This leaves the customer with that “shady” feeling, as in, “what are they trying to hide?” More immediately, I almost forgot they existed because I searched about 15 Honda web site dealerships in my region before heading out for test drives. I didn’t put them my list and I almost bought a car at another location before remembering to call HB. They came inches away from losing my business because of the web site “conceal” (and were they not one town over from where I live, they would have lost my business). 1) Most important - I was trading in a 20 year old car with 193,000 miles that I owned for 18 years, and I was buying a new car for $31,500 in a lousy buyer’s market. In other words, to any astute observer, my financial position was good and I wasn’t exactly desperate for cash on my trade-in (and I knew I wouldn’t get squat anyway). That said, never leave money on the table if you don’t have to. So I got a Kelly Blue Book number for my old Camry (I voluntarily rated the condition “fair,” not “good”), brought in recent repair receipts that showed some good parts in the car (since I knew they’d just use it for parts), and emphasized how well I’d taken care of the vehicle (it looked pretty darn good at 20 years old, to be honest). This wasn’t about money, I was just testing the integrity of the dealership. My *average* Kelly number was $850, and Chris’ boss would only give me $500 for it. I asked Chris to go back to see about upping the price another $200 or so, and there was no deal. Doh! How foolish can you be? A customer who has done his homework comes in with proof of a certain price, receipts, and a good looking old car, and you insult him with a lowball number? Again, they could have given me a penny for the car and I wouldn’t have cared, but I wanted to see what kind of business they were. At the very least, the boss should have emerged from his office and offered an explanation such as, “Your car looks great and I can tell you took good care of it. When it comes to old vehicles that we just use for parts, we treat all customers equally and always offer the conservative end of the Kelly Blue Book number. Considering the age of the car, this is the only fair way to do it. Doing otherwise would cut our profit margins significantly, and we couldn’t run a successful business that way. I think you’ll find this to be true of other dealerships as well.” I would have been totally fine with this explanation because it would have shown respect for the customer, but a boneheaded move that makes any customer feel like they’re not getting a fair shake is just bad business. Again, “sacrifice short term profit for long term market share” is the way to go. Chris knew it, but his employer doesn’t. I recommend Chris the salesperson, but I would advise customers to investigate other Honda dealerships to see if they may treat customers better than does Honda Barn. More
Traded in one CR-V for another. Excellent customer service, friendliness and professionalism. Financing process was done very easily, not like past experiences at a different dealership. I spoke with Bill Bradley on the phone before going to the dealership about the vehicle I was interested in . When we arrived Bill had the vehicle ready to go, he went over the vehicle with me and my wife the dealership about the vehicle I was interested in .
