Hopkins Ford told us, when we asked for an out-the-door price, that they always put a “First Place Finish” on all their vehicles to protect them while in their lot from bird droppings and such. We went to Hopkins Ford in Elgin when we saw a vehicle we were interested in that was CLEARLY PRICED ONLINE for just over $42,000. However, when we asked how much it would be out-the-door, they tacked on $1795 for “Accessories” that they said was something that could not be taken off the price, even though I knew they could. If they truly could not take off the dealer added $1795, then they should have priced the vehicle at $42,000+$1795=$43,795 ONLINE in order to be in compliance with FTC automotive and commercial selling laws. Needless to say, we did not buy at this dealership, and found a better deal elsewhere a couple weeks later from a reputable dealership that does not play these types of games. To save future customers time, here is some information to help the customer INSIST that Hopkins Ford take off the price of accessories if they were not included in their advertised price online. Make sure to take pictures of the advertised price online before going to the dealership if you still desire to buy from them. There are laws against adding up-charges (against your will) that are over and above what the dealer has posted as the vehicle price online (except tax, and minimal title, plates, and doc fees). There was a recent FTC (Federal Trade Commission) lawsuit against another dealership in 2022 that came with rather stiff penalties for the same behavior I am describing from Hopkins Ford. I have also attached some pictures that hit the key points of advertising laws and regulations that Hopkins Ford violated and I hope this post helps vehicle buyers prepare to deny a tactic this dealership used to get potential customers to pay more than they need to. They lie to their customers to get them through the door. Once you are there, they will bait and switch on you with the pricing. Happened to me on Saturday 4/1/2023. As we were filling out the Ford Credit application, they pull out THE REAL PRICE, which was 11k over the asking price. After arguing and being on site for 2 hours, we decided not to buy from them. As we felt we were being deceived. No sale unless you agreed to pay the extra mark up. It would be better if you told me the actual price before I wasted my time coming to your dealership. I would avoid doing business here. More

I worked with Chris Popa on purchasing a used f150 they had posted. We had trade value, financing, insurance, everything lined up and ready to go. He told me he would hold it until the weekend. I took my trade in for a tune up, booked vacation time with work, and rearranged family plans to get out there that weekend only to have it sold out from under me the following morning. Then he tried to flip me into a different vehicle while insisting theybhave standards for how they do business. Don't waste your time. More

To be honest, this was one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a dealership. I met with Austin to go over a Mercedes E class that they had for sale, drove it no problem. I had already received a pre-approval from my credit union so I had no reason to not haggle anything, they had the car listed at 14k, which was slightly higher than what it was worth given the mileage count amongst other factors. We sit down and asks to see the check, he made my father sign a piece of paper stating he would drop the price to 13k which is what we were looking at paying and he said wait a moment he went away and spoke with someone at the desk for approval who I believed to be Jeff Hopkins himself, he came back and said that we would do 13 contingent on us financing with the dealer, that was no problem. They ran our credit against 4 loaners after that it was too many inquires for our liking, he now came back with the sales manager Chris, who frankly was extremely rude and ruined the entire experience. His approach to us was as follows, Hi how are you, what can you do to your price? Me and my father looked dumbfounded because we just agreed and filled out all of the credit apps under the premise we were doing it for 13. He said no that's not what we said and tried to backtrack, asked Austin did you say you would do 13? and he shook his head no, which honestly was almost just as disrespectful as Chris coming in here and basically saying we were lying. We were I would say 10 seconds away from buying the car but frankly Christopher ruined our experience and the sale and lost us as customers. We had left multiple voicemails stating for them to call us back this week to no avail. I personally would not recommend anyone doing business here as their practices are far from clean and kosher.
