My experience recently, in purchasing a Volvo from Leiken Motors, was a delight. It started with Kylie (I don’t recall her last name) reaching out to me to see if I was interested in trading my car over the Motors, was a delight. She was persistent but not annoying - not easy to do. I managed large call centers prior to retiring. My bar for service is high. Ryan, my salesperson, was low key, extremely knowledgeable, and patient. The days I came in were very busy, but Ryan made me feel like I was his only customer. He responded to my text messages over the weekend which I did not expect. I changed my mind on the vehicle originally selected which added work for him. Yes, I was the buyer but he conveyed delight in making the change to make me happy. The slick financing process was awesome. I loved the technology. Typical, dealership experience with a side of casual racism. I had a very specific model and trim level I was looking for and had a preferred color in mind. Only one was advertised in the entire US that ticked all the boxes, and for better or worse, it was at this dealer. The price listed was competitive, and was in my home state of Ohio, albeit 160 miles away. I had the added complication of needing to wait two weeks for a payout to come to me to make the down payment. I called and explained the situation and hoped we could have a smooth process. It was not as smooth as I had hoped. I wanted a partner in the process, but it was typically adversarial. They followed the dealer playbook to a T. The first problem for me was I called before the end of a month but would not be closing until the next month, which was not desirable for them. They tried the steps of creating urgency for me by telling me the vehicle that had been on their lot for some time suddenly had a line of people looking at it. They tried to get me to buy it immediately with nothing down telling me I could refinance later, which felt a little shady to me. Typical high pressure emotional manipulation stuff that all dealers do when they know you want a particular car. When I tried to lower the price (by less than 7%, by the way) they acted like I was personally going to be responsible for the dealership folding and tried to sell the falsehood that they don’t have that much margin. I asked to pay a deposit to hold the car and they did not like that either. Then they got highly defensive that I would suggest they are just like every other car dealer. The only thing that happened that did not follow the “just like all the others” car sales playbook was when the Sales Manager, Danny, made a flippant, wildly inappropriate and terribly racist comment in the “try to save the sale” call. After finding out I was frustrated, he called and while trying to build rapport with me and let me know I wasn’t being unreasonable in my asks. He asked what I did for a living. After hearing it, he made a generalized, racist comment about Somalians. Once he realized what a stupid thing he’d said and how I was not amused, he was much more willing to simply drop the high pressure garbage and work with me. I paid a deposit, they held the car and all paperwork was done online. I couldn’t help but notice that there were no people of color in the building when I arrived to take delivery. Employee or customer. Probably just a coincidence. The pickup process was pretty smooth. Everyone was super friendly and excited when we arrived. The finance guy was trying to be my buddy and asking questions to “get to know us” (meaning plan the dog and pony show sales pitch). Then we got dragged into the room with his fancy smart board where he tried to sell us everything from full warranties to special wax to roadside assistance trying to spin tales of woe and suggesting all cars are garbage and destined to break. Once they realized I was not going to be bullied into extras, the friendliness ended and it was essentially “here’s your hat, what’s your hurry”. The guy who handed over the keys actually closed the car door on me as I was talking to him. Drove down the road to the mall, threw their license plate rings into the trash and went back to Columbus with my car. Which, to be fair, was beautifully prepared and in better condition than described. At least the final in-person interaction was less than half an hour. Last note: Got the car home and noticed that the tires were set 10-12 psi too high. When I set them properly, the road noise was significant. Took to my mechanic and found one of the belts in one of the tires was broken and rather than replace the tires, someone pumped the tires up to an unsafe level to hide the noise. "typical shady dealer stuff" as my mechanic said. One final 500 dollar gift from this poverty dealership. More
