Deceptive Practice - ChuckG
I am a first time RV buyer. Unfortunately I made this clear to the sales personnel at River City RV in Sherwood Ark.
I purchased a 2008 HR Arista 310 from RiverCity RV in Sherwood Ark and paid cash on Oct 25, 2018. The salesman and I went over the RV on Oct 18 and I put down a $1000 deposit and we agreed on several things that were to be fixed. I gave them a week to fix them.
1. Oil change on main engine and generator.
2. A general Safety inspection of RV including engine area for worn belts , etc.
3. Obvious leaks and seal damage on both forward slides. There was staining on the carpet that indicated there were leaks.
(water literally ran into the RV from both front slides in the first storm I encountered)
4. Several drawers were inoperable due to broken slides.
5. I walked the roof and when I asked the Sales Manager about some bubbling in the the rubber he stated it was "normal".
I have since learned he lied it is NOT normal and indicates water intrusion. He lied to me!!
6. Awning needed to be replaced.
They had a week to fix all these issues but did "NOTHING" until I show up on 25 Oct to pay for it. When I discovered the work was not done I said I was not buying the RV. The sales manager convinced me they could get it all done and the RV would be ready for me by the next day. I ended up waiting 2 more days so they could replace the awning. So they actually had 9 days to do the all the repairs.
I picked up the RV very early on Sat morning 27 Oct. and headed to Virginia. RV looked perfect. Carpet was clean and all drawers worked. Everything appeared to be done. I did not put slides out or check the engine compartment because I trusted them to do the work they promised.and assumed they were fixed. My mistake!
I made it home in 2 days and besides some stability issues I loved the RV.
On my first night home we had a torrential downpour all night. When I went into the RV in the morning the entire carpet was soaked and the ventilation duct work in the floor was full of water. I managed to get it dried out with a shop vac and then by running the furnace to dry out the duct work once the water was removed.
I immediately contacted River CIty RV and told them about the issues. Then I started to look more closely at the RV.
- Oil filter was old and rusted, obviously not new as promised.
- Seals on both front slides were leaking and torn away from the chassis. Obviously not repaired or replaced.
- Serpentine belt that drives everything from power steering to AC was split and shredding. Obviously not checked.
- Found numerous wires under RV just hanging down. They did some gray water pipe repair under the RV so they should have seen this.
Then I run a CarFax. There is an 8000 mile rollback on mileage of the unit. When I mention this to the dealer they said they did not know you could run a CarFax on an RV. REALLY???
Since the RV was unusable or unsafe with these issues, and to prevent further damage I wanted to get them repaired right away. RiverCity wanted me to bring it back to Arkansas at my expense. 2000 miles round trip. 4 days of travel and approx $5-600 in gas. Not a good offer. Or take it to a Camping World dealership. No camping world affiliate near me could get it in for over 2 months so I told them I was taking it to a local
RV repair near me to get it fixed and we could work something out on getting my money back. which the GM seemed agreeable to. It cost over $3000 total to make the RV usable and safe.
It has been 6 months since I bought the RV and RiverCity has been stringing me along with me thinking they were going to make it right. I have been in contact with the Sales Manager, Service Manager and General Manager constantly throughout this whole ordeal.
After the first month the sales manager just stated "you bought a used RV as is" Not, we want to make this right and do what we promised because we are a reputable dealership. The GM later offered me a $500 in store credit but no more.
Bottom line is the dealership lied to me on several occasions and failed to repair verbally contracted repairs. All they did was clean it up to look like they had done the repairs.
I am currently consulting an attorney for a civil action, the Arkansas Attorney General about the mileage discrepancy, and a local TV station, 7 On You Side, that reports on deceptive practices like this.

Kept us waiting for four hours while getting loan approved. Didn't ask us if we could put down more money than what was allowed on our trade in. Showed us the size of payment and didn't tell us that the so called addons amounted to about $10,000. Also padded the agreed upon price by adding over $1500. He said that he increased the purchase price of the unit and the trade in price to get the down payment high enough to get the loan but in the process jacked up the agreed upon trade. It was my fault because I didn't read the purchase agreement closely enough. My only excuse was that I will be 80 years old tomorrow and after driving 250 miles and sitting in an uncomfortable chair for about four hours, I was exhausted. Not a happy customer. I was able to opt out of some of the addons and will pay off the loan shortly saving over $60,000.
