My salesman was excellent. Knowledgeable, open to discussion, found exactly what I was looking for and off we went for the test drive. The vehicle was a new one, in an older model, and they were quick to take off of sticker price to “get it off the lot.” They had me, I loved the car, they had told me a great deal, and all was good and I was good to buy. We get to the finance office (should have brought in my own financing, I know) and I am shown the itemized list, and shoo buddy it wasn’t hard to see where the quick discounts were really going. Over $2,400 in unnecessary fees, $1,100 advertising fee, $400 lot financing fee, $800 “base vehicle holdback,” and the $100 PIO holdback. I simply am not responsible for your advertisement costs, and I don’t care how long it sat on the lot. I’m there to buy a vehicle. It hurt to walk away as the advertising fee and lot financing fee were unacceptable to me, and I’m not 100% sure, but I am pretty sure the holdbacks are rebates from Toyota not paid by the customers so you can double dip, but I was willing to pay those as they had taken so much off the top I would be a little confused, but happy. The sale before tax titles and fees for an old model “they wanted to get rid of” was more than msrp, but until you looked closely it sounded like a decent deal, not even a great one. More
