Introduced at the 1967 Frankfurt Auto Show, the 15 'New Generation' Mercedes-Benz models went on sale the following January and redefined the company's high-end lineup. Offered from 1969 through 1972, the fuel-injected 280 SE Coupe and Cabriolet featured elegant styling and luxurious yet functional appointments, constructed mostly by hand to exacting quality standards. Delivering even greater power, prestige and exclusivity, the 280SE 3.5 Coupe and Cabriolet raised the bar with smooth, turbine-like V-8 power. Production of these glamorous, elite-level cars spanned 1969 through 1971, with 4,502 built in total. Of them, just 1,164 left-hand drive Cabriolets were built, including as few as 325 for the final 1971 model year, according to published sources citing factory data. Today, these sophisticated and timeless automobiles are coveted by knowledgeable collectors worldwide.
Handsomely finished in DB350 Blue (non-metallic) with Parchment leather upholstery, this exemplary 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet is of course powered by the famed Mercedes-Benz SOHC 3.5-liter V-8 engine, equipped with Bosch fuel injection and factory-rated at 200 horsepower. A column-shifted 4-speed automatic transmission delivers the power. Desirable factory-fitted amenities include Behr air conditioning, a Becker 'Mexico' radio, and power windows.
As offered, this Mercedes-Benz icon continues to benefit from a beautifully maintained, older cosmetic restoration performed by marque specialist Robert Platz's Precision Autoworks. A comprehensive history file accompanies the sale of the vehicle, dating back two decades, including a complete engine overhaul and recent comprehensive servicing and mechanical sorting by Jim Cosgrove's Old Timer Restoration Center, totalling nearly $30,000 in invoices. Accompanying items include a tool roll and roadside jack, owner's manuals, original convertible top wrenches, and Coco floor mats. Be sure to ccontact us today to see this exceedingly rare and wonderfully presented and maintained 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet for yourself, obtain full details, and make it yours in time for classic tours, shows, and events.
