The 2022 Lexus UX 200 is the brand's smallest and most affordable crossover. It's designed for urban drivers who prioritize style, fuel efficiency, and the Lexus badge in a easy-to-maneuver package. It competes in a crowded segment against the Audi Q3, BMW X1/X2, and Mercedes-Benz GLA. Performance & Driving Experience Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4 cylinder Power: 169 horsepower @ 6,600 rpm, 151 lb-ft of torque @ 4,800 rpm Transmission: Direct-Shift Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with a physical first gear. Drivetrain: Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) standard; All-Wheel Drive (AWD) available. Driving Character: The Refined City Commuter Acceleration: The UX 200 is not a performance vehicle. The 169 hp engine is adequate for city driving but feels underpowered for highway merging and passing maneuvers compared to turbocharged rivals. It's one of the least powerful vehicles in its class. Transmission: The CVT is tuned for smoothness and efficiency. The physical first gear helps provide a more natural feeling off the line, reducing the rubber band effect common to many CVTs. It's refined but unengaging. Handling & Ride: This is where the UX shines. The ride is comfortably firm, soaking up bumps well while feeling nimble and composed in corners. The steering is precise and well-weighted, making it a joy to drive in the city. It feels more like a raised hatchback than an SUV. Fuel Economy This is a key strength for the UX 200, especially with FWD. FWD: 29 mpg city / 37 mpg highway / 32 mpg combined AWD: 26 mpg city / 33 mpg highway / 29 mpg combined These numbers are highly competitive and often best-in-class for a non-hyrid in the luxury segment. Interior, Technology & Practicality Interior Design & Quality: The cabin is a highlight. Lexus uses high-quality, interesting materials, often with artistic stitching and textured surfaces. The build quality is impeccable. It feels more special and better assembled than many German rivals in the same price bracket. Technology: Infotainment: The standard 7-inch or optional 10.3-inch screen is controlled via the frustrating Remote Touch Interface touchpad. This system is widely criticized for being distracting and difficult to use while driving. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Mark Levinson® Audio: An available premium sound system that is exceptional for this class. Practicality (The Major Compromise): Rear Seat & Cargo Space: This is the UX's biggest weakness. The rear seats are very cramped for adults, and cargo space is abysmal for the class. Cargo Volume: 21.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats. This is significantly less than rivals (Audi Q3 has 24 cu ft, BMW X1 has 27 cu ft) and even less than many compact sedans. Safety Lexus is a leader in safety, and the UX is top-rated.
