Luther Burnsville Volkswagen responded

When the customer ordered a new vehicle we appraised his trade in with the understanding it would need to be re-appraised when the vehicle arrived 6 to 8 weeks later. When we did the re-appraisal we felt the car was probably worth a few hundred dollars less. There was an additional couple thousand miles and the wholesale market had been declining. Auction prices were down, especially on high mileage SUV’s. Despite that we decided to offer him the same value as we had when the car was first ordered. It is true that some book values had fluctuated up a couple hundred or few hundred dollars. There was also a guideline or two that had declined. We do use these book values and online appraisal tools as a guide when we put a value on a vehicle. Sometimes however these guidelines are above what the market dictates a vehicle is actually worth, and other times they are below the true market value. I believe the misunderstanding arose because one book value happened to match our first appraisal when the car was ordered, and even though that particular book value went up, our valuation of the vehicle did not. I can also understand the customer’s frustration that we were within just a few hundred dollars of “agreeing on a price.” We however are a Luther Fair Value facility and we make a serious commitment to put our best price and trade valuation forward without playing any games. We do not “hold back” a couple hundred dollars which could then be used to increase the value of his trade. We are sorry that anyone would leave with a poor impression of our efforts, but we do appreciate the feedback.
