In other words, this was not a simple walk-in-and-shake-hands situation. I contacted nine dealers. Nine. Sierra at Northtown Hyundai is the one who earned the business, and she earned it fast. The negotiation was conducted almost entirely by email and text. Sierra was responsive, transparent, and here's the thing that matters most: she didn't play games. No "let me check with my manager" every three messages. No phantom numbers. She put a real offer on the table early, it was competitive, and when I told her I had another offer she matched it without drama. That's how buying a car should work and almost never does. We drove home in a 2026 IONIQ 9 Calligraphy (yes, the Calligraphy, that's the part where Sierra quietly upgraded us to a better trim at a price that made sense) and a 2026 Kona Limited in Ultimate Red for my wife. Both trades, including a Mazda CX-5 with two years left on the lease and meaningful negative equity, were absorbed cleanly. No remaining payments, no surprise fees, no damage charges. As promised, in writing, in advance. Sierra is genuinely good at her job. She's communicative, she's honest, and she treats the customer like an adult who can understand numbers. In a business that often runs on opacity, that's not a small thing. So why four stars instead of five? Two things happened at delivery that shouldn't have. The floor mats: The IONIQ 9 Calligraphy came with carpeted floor mats listed on the window sticker at $245 as a line item. They weren't in the car. A tech scrambled to pull a mat set from another IONIQ on the lot, which was a good-faith effort but the wrong fitment. The Calligraphy has a unique floor layout; generic IONIQ mats don't fit. We got home and discovered this. I went ahead and ordered WeatherTech laser-fit mats on my own (upstate New York winters don't wait on delivery logistics) and let Sierra know, offering to return the borrowed set so that other IONIQ on the lot doesn't end up selling without its mats. That's the kind of thing that should be a non-issue at delivery. It wasn't. The registration swap: The plates ended up on the correct vehicles. The NYS registrations, however, were swapped, with each car getting the other car's registration. Not a catastrophic error, but not something you want to discover on the side of a highway if you're ever asked to produce it. Sierra is sending corrected registrations by mail. I believe her. But this is the kind of detail that a more deliberate handoff process catches before the customer drives away. Both are fixable. Neither is a reason to choose a different dealer. But they're also not nothing, and for an $80,000 vehicle that Northtown should be proud to deliver, the finish line matters as much as the race. The bottom line: Sierra earns six stars out of five. The delivery process earns three. I'm rounding to four and watching to see how the follow-through goes. Fix the mat situation (maybe a reimbursement for the weather techs,) get those registrations corrected, and build a delivery checklist that matches the quality of the sales experience, and the fifth star is right there waiting.
