Thank you for the feedback. You are right, our team should have given a more detailed answer. Being close to the ground, exhaust systems are exposed to rainwater, snow, ice, and road salt, all of which contribute to rusting. Also, water vapor and acidic gases, which are byproducts of burning fuel, condense inside the exhaust system leading to internal rust. For the specific used car you are referring to, unfortunately we do not know the exact conditions the previous owner drove in, however since they lived in rural Pennsylvania they definitely would have experienced rain, snow, and ice, and if their driveway or local roads are not paved, it's possible they experienced mud as well.
