Seller's Comments

1969 was the first year the Mach 1 name ever appeared on a production Mustang, and Ford introduced it into one of the most competitive performance car markets Detroit had ever seen. That year, buyers could also choose the Boss 302, Boss 429, Shelby GT350, and Shelby GT500. The Mach 1 outsold every single one of them. It moved 72,458 units in its first year alone, nearly a quarter of all Mustang sales, and Ford's response was to kill the GT model entirely the following year because the Mach 1 had made it irrelevant. This one is finished in Candy Apple Red with a large black hood stripe, Mach 1 side and rear badging, and 351 hood badging, and it wears the first-year details the way a car like this deserves to. Under the hood is the 351 cubic inch Windsor V8 backed by an automatic transmission. The 351 was the standard engine in the Mach 1 and it was chosen specifically to make the package accessible to a wider range of buyers without sacrificing the look and feel of a real performance car. It pulls with the easy, unhurried authority of a classic American V8 and sounds exactly right doing it. To give you an idea of what Ford thought of the Mach 1 package overall, they took a modified example to the Bonneville Salt Flats and set 295 USAC land speed and endurance records, then put that fact directly into their advertising. Inside, the black leather seats are set against a wood dash and wood interior door panels with the Mach 1 logo, a combination that gives the cabin a genuinely upscale feel that was standard equipment on the Mach 1 and not available on lesser Mustangs. The leather wrapped steering wheel, glove box clock, Sunpro oil pressure gauge, and back window vent covers are all present and add to the character of a car that has been put together with care. Pinstripes run along the sides and rear, a chrome front bumper and black underlip finish the exterior, and silver wheels round out a car that looks sharp from every angle. The 1969 Mach 1 was the right car at the right time, built during the absolute peak of the muscle car era before emissions regulations and fuel shortages changed everything. First year cars in this kind of condition and in this color are exactly what the collector market has been chasing, and they are not getting any easier to find.
