Mercedes-AMGs GT C, in both coupe and convertible guises, along with the full-howitzer GT R coupe, represent the upper echelon of the brand's sports-car lineup. These sultry two-seaters serve as hard-core Porsche 911 fighters for Mercedes-Benzs go-fast AMG nameplate. Gorgeous lines, a stonking twin-turbo V-8 engine, and loads of grip make them as capable as they are sexy. A sumptuous interior and the ability to drop the roadsters top bring plenty of kicks off the racing circuit, but these remain serious driving machines through and through. While the AMG GT itself isnt new, the racier C and R are fresh to the lineup for 2018. All GTs now sport the brands vertical-slatted Panamericana grille, with the C and R receiving significant boosts in power compared with lesser versions, as well as unique body addenda and an arsenal of performance technology. A hand-assembled engine is at the heart of the GTs, specifically a silky twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 that pumps out 550 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque in the GT C. The boosted V-8 spins to a 7000-rpm redline and is responsible for the GTs deep, roaring exhaust note and rowdy character. With oodles of power, high-tech traction aids, loads of handling hardware, and race-car-like grip, the AMG GT C and GT R are forces to be reckoned with. But it is the grace with which these cars combine their wider rear tracks, limited-slip rear differentials, active rear steering, and adaptive dampers that makes them such sweet and capable handlers. The interior is beautifully detailed, incorporates gorgeous materials, and is nicely equipped with luxury amenities. Most of the switchgear is straightforward. All GT models receive beautiful, bear-hugging AMG Performance seats as standard, with those in the roadster also sporting heated neck blowers for comfortable top-down motoring on cooler days. In practice, catapulting to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds in this AMG is a neck-snapping, hold-on-with-both-hands, giggle-inducing riot, especially with the top down so that the sublime, unfiltered soundtrack washes over the occupants. Torque is omnipresent, with all 502 lb-ft available from 1900 rpm and served with almost zero lag in Sport or Sport+ modes.
