Why We Acquired This Vehicle
BMW M has developed exactly two standalone models in its history. The first was the M1 in 1978. The second is the XM - not an M version of an existing BMW, but a vehicle designed by the M division from the ground up, and the first electrified high-performance car the division has ever produced. Whatever anyone thinks of how it looks, there is no ambiguity about what it is: a deliberate landmark in the history of BMW M.
This example arrived with its original window sticker, so its specification is documented rather than assumed - and the document is instructive. Against a $159,000 base, the total suggested price came to $163,395, yet the order sheet runs to more than forty lines. Almost all of that equipment arrived at no charge, with only the range-topping audio system carrying a cost. What the sticker shows is a car specified broadly across chassis, comfort, and driver-assistance equipment rather than left near the base configuration.
