We needed to buy a new car for my wife, and it had been many years since either of us had been to a dealer. We were not looking forward to the whole 'dealership experience'. We set an appointment to meet many years since either of us had been to a dealer. We were not looking forward to the whole 'dealership experience'. We set an appointment to meet with the sales staff, and arrived a few minutes early to look at the vehicles she was interested in, as she was not sure if she wanted a Forester or a Crosstrek. The first thing I noticed was that we were not immediately approached by a salesperson. Some might think that is a bad thing - we appreciated the fact that we were allowed to look at cars without feeling pressure. We went in and spoke to Soren, a very nice man who proceeded to get us seats and inform the sales staff that we were there. Very quickly, we met our sales consultant Christy. Well, I can't say enough good things about her. Super friendly, no 'car salesman' vibe at all, just genuinely interested in helping us pick the best car for our needs. She quickly determined what we were looking for as far as features, color, and price range and did not try to influence us by showing the top of the line, all the bells and whistles (i.e. expensive) models. My wife and I both appreciated this. We picked out a vehicle that met our criteria (my wife choose the Crosstrek) and got us set up for our test drive. Another aspect of the car buying experience we were not looking forward to was the test drive with the sales person, as that is always rather awkward and really doesn't let you have any time to yourselves to get a sense of how the car feels or how all the features work at your own pace. Christy gave us the key, told us the route to take, which did not include any freeway driving but she had no problem with us taking it on the freeway when I asked, and then she turned us loose. The test drive was great, and we decided we wanted the car. When we returned to the dealer, we went in and sat down with Christy at her desk to discuss the deal. My wife and I we really not looking forward to this part of the process, as neither of us is adept at negotiating, or quite frankly comfortable doing it. Once again, Christy was refreshingly easy to work with and surprisingly low pressure. I think she picked up on the fact that we weren't going to be hard cases to deal with and made no attempt to take advantage of that. My wife and I both appreciated that. The only glitch we had in the entire process was the trade in price for our current car, a 2006 Subaru Outback wagon with 107500 miles. Neither of us wanted to deal with having to sell the car ourselves. We were hoping to get 3K, as KBB wholesale value listed it as between 2500 and 3500. We were disappointed by the initial offer of 1750 as the car was super clean with very low mileage and my wife was the original owner. Christy asked what we were hoping for and I told her 3K. She explained the dealerships' position as far as not being able to put it on the used car lot due to being over 100K in mileage, and that it would be going to auction. My wife and I asked if they would give us 2K, and if so we would have a deal. She agreed to that and the deal was done! Off to finance: We met with Nikolas Madrid to complete the paperwork. Our great experience continued, as he was very professional and friendly. We knew that part of the financial process would be trying to sell us things like extended warranties (which we had already decided we wanted), additional theft protection, etc. At no point did Nikolas use any high pressure tactics to sell us additional items we did not want, although he did offer one item at slightly over dealer cost, and when we declined he politely accepted our answer and moved on. We also appreciated how most of the paperwork is now electronic signature based - it certainly sped up the entire process. Long story short - this was by far the best experience either of us has had at any dealership, for any reason. Christy was simply awesome - a salesperson that all salespeople should strive to emulate. Very genuine, helpful, courteous, and respectful of our needs. Thank you so much for turning an experience we were dreading into a truly enjoyable one. Buying a new car should be fun and exciting, and Bob Baker Subaru certainly made that happen for us. More
