I traded in my vehicle at a dealership where they were supposed to handle the payoff on my existing loan. More than 30 days passed, and the loan still had not been paid off. During this time, I was given supposed to handle the payoff on my existing loan. More than 30 days passed, and the loan still had not been paid off. During this time, I was given little clear communication and had to repeatedly follow up to get basic updates. Eventually, I was told the delay and resulting issue was my responsibility, and that I now owed a “shortage” to Toyota, despite no clear breakdown or documentation being provided upfront. This experience has been frustrating because the responsibility to pay off the trade-in loan was part of the agreement at the time of sale. The delay appears to have been on the dealership side, yet the financial impact was being shifted back to me after the fact. I requested written proof and a clear explanation of the numbers, but the communication has been inconsistent. I would strongly recommend that anyone trading in a vehicle gets everything in writing, closely monitors payoff timing with their lender, and does not assume the dealership will complete the payoff quickly without follow-up. More
