I I have purchased 5 cars from Bales over the last 20 years. When I called and asked for the salesman I usually deal with, I found he had left Bales. I almost changed my mind about purchasing a car from a new salesman, but I decided to let Eric Borden have a chance. I am really glad I did. Eric really went the extra mile to get me a deal I could manage without any pressure. More

It was a 2013 model and for the first several months we took it strictly to the dealer for service. It is my car, but we car pool and my husband usually took it in because his work was close to the dealership. On a few occasions it worked out that I had to take the car in. I felt the techs were condescending towards me, but wanted to make sure that I wasn’t imagining things. So the next time it went in my husband and I went together. I made sure not to mention their previous behavior to my husband. While I was talking to the technician he kept referring to my husband when I asked a question. By the time we left my husband was hot under the collar and together we decided not to return to Bales for regular service. At about 70,000 miles the car began making a very audible clacking noise when first started. Initially the noise would disappear after 5 minutes and the engine was warm. I am religious about oil changes and regular maintenance. I took the car into Bales and explained what was going on and that I suspected a bad bearing or rod. The mechanic had me leave the car with him and kept it for the day. He claimed he couldn’t get the sound to duplicate and that 4 cylinders were naturally a bit loud. At this time he mentioned that if it needed further explanation to have my husband call him. This really torqued me off. In retrospect I should have contacted Hyundai corporate and gotten this taken care of. As time went on the noise and frequency of it increased. At 97,000 miles I was sure this was not normal 4 cylinder behavior. The noise had become a loud clanking that never desisted, the engine was losing compression, and it felt like the engine was choking. I was certain at this point I either had a cracked head, a bad rod, bad bearing, or something else seriously wrong in the engine. Now, let’s preempt this. While not a mechanic, I am not totally at a loss when dealing with engines. I striped a motorcycle by myself as a teen and put it back together with nothing more than a mechanic’s manual and the tools I dug out of my Dad’s kits. It even ran great except for a sticky throttle and I didn’t have any extra parts after putting it back together. While not a gargantuan feat of repair, this does qualify me as knowing just enough to be dangerous. Contrastingly my husband, while a highly intelligent man, can’t figure out which oil to use in our ride mower. Soooo…. Back to Bales I went. January of 2016 I take the car into Bales again. I took the day off as I figured they would be at it a while figuring out what was wrong. I explained briefly what was going on and my suspicions, it was obvious the mechanic was barely listening to me. I was in the waiting room maybe 15 minutes when he came back to get me. He stated the car was fine, absolutely perfect. I asked him, “So the fact that engine sounds like a tin can is banging against the hood and the fact I can’t get it to move forward until it is completely warmed up is normal? “ This is where it got interesting and I realized these people are not honest. He proceeded to explain that… “Yes, these cars are loud, that is normal, you were most likely loosing compression because you took the car to Valvoline for oil changes. Our Hyundai oil filters are different than any aftermarket filter you can purchase, they have a special valve that keeps proper compression in the engine. I changed the oil for you, at no charge, everything should be fine now. Have your husband call me if he has any questions.” Did this dude think I was born yesterday? Seriously? I calmly took my keys, thanked him for his honesty, and left. This time I did contact corporate. They sent me to Hyundai of Louisville after I told them there was no way I was going back to Bales. Hyundai of Louisville gave us a loaner and kept the car for three weeks. Guess what? It was a bad rod, they replaced the engine. Go figure. So please, let ALL your female friends know NOT to go to Bales for ANYTHING! They definitely live up to their "Unbelievable service" slogan. More
