From there on, between our own online research on the Carmax website and 24-hour test drives arranged with Luis, we enjoyed a really positive and fairly stress-free experience. He arranged to have cars brought in from nearby Carmax locations for us to see and drive. Over the course of a month, we bought two cars with Luis' help, and Luis did well to make it an experience.worth celebrating and without buyer's remorse. All the employees at this location welcomed us and seemed to take pleasure in making it a positive experience for us. There were no pressure tactics or hard sell. On their website, Carmax discloses lots of details about each car, loads of photos, and includes the Experian AutoCheck report. Not every car is perfect, so the buyer needs to do their own due diligence even before seeing a car in person. The 24-hour test drive allowed us to have our own mechanic perform a used car inspection, as well as put the car through its paces ourselves to make sure we were comfy with it. (Carmax even has a guide on their website for what to look for and how to do a test drive on a used car.) On one car, our mechanic found a few items needing attention due to the vehicle hitting one of the manufacturer's maintenance mileposts, and after showing the report to Luis and the repair shop at Carmax, they were not hesitant to schedule a follow up appointment to address those issues. CarMax Misrepresented the Vehicle and Refused Accountability I purchased a car from CarMax after their employees explicitly told me it had no accident history. When I went to sell the car, I discovered that the DMV had recorded an accident on the vehicle a full year before I bought it. This misrepresentation cost me a $3,000 in lost value, verified by an auto broker who showed me recent comparable sales of nearly identical vehicles. When I raised this issue with CarMax, they refused to accept any responsibility or compensate me for any of the loss in value. CarMax heavily markets “peace of mind” and “transparency,” but my experience shows those claims are hollow. If their employees can misrepresent a car’s history and the company refuses to make it right, then buyers cannot trust the accuracy of anything they’re told. Furthermore, do not rely on the CarMax vehicle inspection to uncover previous damage that would have been discoverable by a competent mechanic. Be certain to complete an independent pre-purchase inspection using a competent mechanic. CarMax misrepresented the vehicle I purchased, and their refusal to stand behind their word shows a lack of integrity. Buyers beware—you could be left with a car worth thousands less than you were led to believe. More
