My concerns are specifically with the dealership’s mechanical inspection and service standards. Before finalizing my purchase, I asked to review the mechanic’s detailed inspection notes—not just the high-level checklist provided—so I could better understand what required immediate attention and have an informed discussion with my own mechanic. The shop refused to provide those notes, citing store policy. I proceeded with the purchase, and it quickly became clear why transparency would have mattered. While the issues I discovered were relatively straightforward to correct, they should have been addressed—or at minimum disclosed—during a proper inspection. There was an oil leak due to a missing and improperly tightened gasket ring. The skid plate was secured with only two bolts instead of four. The power steering fluid, front and rear differential fluids, transfer case fluid, and brake fluid all needed servicing. There were no service records available. When I referenced the Toyota 4Runner owner’s manual and noted that these fluids were past due according to manufacturer guidelines, I was repeatedly told that the dealership would not perform the services because, according to their standards, it was “not time.” That response made it clear to me that the inspection process is designed to meet only the minimum threshold necessary to avoid liability—not to bring a vehicle up to a proactive or manufacturer-recommended standard of care. Ultimately, I stopped trying to work through the service department and instead invested in making the vehicle roadworthy to a much higher standard than what was provided. Buyers should understand that the dealership’s “quality check” appears focused on meeting basic legal requirements rather than ensuring the vehicle is thoroughly serviced in line with manufacturer recommendations. While they have a number of vehicle brands and do not expect the mechanics to be trained to service all makes and models, this is why transparency of what they find during their inspection is so important for buyers to make a more informed purchase. I've never bought a car before at CarMax and was surprised at how easy it was. My sales person Justin was extremely helpful. Would definitely buy from them again (and ask for Justin Session if you go to this store). More
I want to start this review by saying our sales person, Angel Duenez, was incredibly helpful, kind, patient and accommodating. And he was brazenly screwed over by every single other person working there who made this process breathtakingly longer and stupider than it needed to be. Angel should be running that place, and everyone else should be reprimanded severely. I shopped around for a family minivan and finally found one in a good price and condition at CarMax. I wanted to go through CarMax because I had heard it was straight forward and streamlined. This would turn out to be not true. I showed up to test drive and purchase the van and trade in my wife's Ford Fusion. Because we were co-signing and trading in, I would have to return with my wife for a 2nd appointment. This made sense and so I did as much paperwork I could do on my own. Once we did return, we found out that because her last name was different when she bought the car (pre-marriage) than it was now (after taking my last name) we would need a whole bunch of more paperwork. So we scheduled a time to come back in AGAIN and in the meantime, I sent photos of multiple SSN cards and marriage paperwork in. We were told we would be doing an express pickup and that everything should be ready and quick and easy. This was ALSO not the case. So when we returned for our THIRD appointment, we faced more scrutiny. I do not know why they assumed we were conducting some elaborate ruse to get a mini-van. I have never had so many problems just trying to hand thousands of dollars to a corporation before in my entire life. So after this "express pickup" had already lasted about 2 hours, my wife and I had to go as we had important appointments with our children (who were both with us for the entire time, restlessly squirming and having about as much fun as a child can have while waiting for 2 hours.) Finally, we were told all paperwork was done so my wife left with our son so I could grab the new van and leave with our daughter. After the cute little photo with the bow, the finance people apparently needed more paperwork. We were told they needed to physically scan my wife's drivers license. They already had it in their possession and gave it back. They had multiple photos of it front and back. But apparently they needed it again. So NOW my wife has to return from the appointment she had already arrived at, with my now VERY agitated son. But they assured us that this would, again, be quick. It wasn't. At this point I was already running late for my appointment so I had to leave with our daughter. My wife took over assuming she and our son would be leaving there soon. They weren't Apparently the finance people changed our loan paperwork a few times in between our trio of meetings which messed everything up. At one point they handed her a check for the trade-in, but the trade-in value was supposed to go directly to the down payment. Multiple financial employees started openly arguing with each other in front of my wife and son at this point. It seems nobody had any idea what was going on. Finally my wife left. I have since had to track down the info to see if our down payment was even applied. And now I have found out that the Max extended care was not explained properly and I will have to go back into the dealership YET AGAIN to have it cancelled. A giant pain in the xxx. I will never deal with CarMax again and when I need another car I will deal with a seller directly and my own personal bank for a loan. This "streamlining" was not worth it. I do not recommend this business to anyone. It's just as scammy as a shady craigslist seller, only actually HARDER to deal with somehow. The van was priced fairly though, so they got that going for them I guess. More

There was no receptionist at the front so I came into Carmax feeling lost and waiting. I despise purchasing a car but it was time.
