Pinky ring and an attitude. Last week I went to Mid Island with my wife to buy a Tuscon. We knew exactly what we wanted and planned on buying it later in the year, however my wif Last week I went to Mid Island with my wife to buy a Tuscon. We knew exactly what we wanted and planned on buying it later in the year, however my wife's old minivan died unexpectedly. We are in the process of selling a couple of properties and planned on paying cash for the car. However with the early demise of my wife['s minivan we needed to finance it for the short term. When it came time to talk numbers we told this to our salesman Patsy Bellomo. He then went off to talk to his finance person and came back with a monthly payment figure. When I asked to see the numbers he tried to steer me away from it by some xxxxxxxx about there are two ways to look at ownership and if the monthlies were too much he could increase the term or I could lease it. I assured him the monthlies were not a problem, but I wanted to see what I was paying for. He then, with an attitude, came back with if I can afford the monthlies what is the problem? The problem is just because I can afford to does not mean I will pay more than something is worth. I then quickly calculated the price of the car by multiplying the monthlies by the number of months then subtracting the tax and finance charge. The result was significantly ABOVE STICKER price and about $2500 above the average sale price listed by Edmund's for the same configuration in our area. He then asked what I was willing to pay. I gave him a price $500 above the Edmund's average. He then went off to "discuss" it with his manager. From across the show room they made a loud display to scoff at it. He then came back and dismissed us by a sarcastic "thank you for coming in". When we got up to leave he insulted us by making a big production of ripping up our paper work. We left and went to 112 Hyundai. They were very straight forward and transparent, showing us exactly what we were paying for. The final deal with 112 came out to a little less than the Edmund average. There used to be a commercial for a Riverhead dealership that said the one thing you would never get is a salesman with an attitude or pinky ring. Patsy at Mid Island had both. More
