Vehicle: 2009 Subaru Outback XT The Purchase: Test drove the vehicle with no warning lights. Was told it had a pre-sale inspection by Subaru, and they would fix the issues found. Everything appeared n drove the vehicle with no warning lights. Was told it had a pre-sale inspection by Subaru, and they would fix the issues found. Everything appeared normal during the test drive. What Happened: Within 4 hours of driving off the lot on my way home to St. Louis, the check engine light and TPMS warning light both came on. I took the vehicle to a Subaru Dealership in St Louis for another inspection. Problems Found: • Alternator failure (Fixed) • Battery Low voltage (Fixed) • Serpentine belt incorrectly installed (Fixed) • TPMS sensors not reporting (Awaiting DriveSmart) • Leaking front axle boot (Fixed) • Damaged AC compressor sensor and electrical connector (Fixed) • Rack and Pinion Leak (Awaiting DriveSmart) • Damaged AC compressor sensor and electrical connector (Fixed) Total repair costs: $4,000+ The AC Issue: The AC compressor temperature sensor for this vehicle is discontinued. I've checked Subaru, O'Reilly, and RockAuto—no one has it. The compressor was replaced, and the system recharged, but the sensor had to be fixed by another shop, which means no warranty. The CV Axle: The axle was replaced due to safety concerns at the St Louis Subaru Dealership. Dealership Response: I called multiple times and could not reach anyone. I sent a detailed email with service documentation attached. No one responded. The sales rep who sold me the car was let go. The manager who took over has since quit. There is no one left to resolve this. Bottom Line: I understand older cars need maintenance. But multiple system failures within hours of purchase, combined with zero response from the dealership, suggest the pre-sale inspection was inadequate. The lack of any continuity in staff means there is no accountability. More
