Loyalty Shouldn’t Require Brinkmanship I have purchased about five vehicles from East Madison Toyota over the years, and my family has purchased several more. I’ve always chosen this dealership b purchased about five vehicles from East Madison Toyota over the years, and my family has purchased several more. I’ve always chosen this dealership because of past positive experiences — until now. Two days ago, I came in to purchase another vehicle and, as a loyal customer, asked for a $500–$1,000 courtesy discount. Instead of a constructive conversation, the sales manager compared it to negotiating the price of a carton of eggs at the grocery store — which I found dismissive and unprofessional. What made it worse was that, moments later, he said he would have given me $500 off a car I bought last month if I had “talked” to him first — directly contradicting his earlier statement that they “don’t negotiate prices.” It was only after I was clearly upset and ready to take my business elsewhere that he suddenly offered $311 off and an additional year of maintenance service. While I appreciate getting something, this felt like brinkmanship — holding out until the customer is at the breaking point before making an offer. That’s not how loyalty should be treated. Customers who return year after year should be valued from the start, not only when they’re about to walk out the door. More
