He listened carefully to the problems that I described and the questions that I had about setting up Android Auto on Jetta. Axel got right into my car and set up the Android Auto. He then quickly determined that the repairs on the rear wheel sensor and AC were going to quite awhile; so he immediately set me up with a rental car. The car was ready the next day. It was hassle free and seamless service. More

I had done quite a bit of research and came prepared with the stock # for the vehicle I wanted, the MSRP of the vehicle, what I was willing to pay vs. the MSRP, the residual value, and the money factor. After the pleasantries, I worked with Mr. Latesta on negotiating the purchase price. We went back and forth a couple of times and came to a number that was approximately $2,300 off MSRP. From there I requested a lease worksheet that broke down the details of the lease: Cap cost, money factor, residual value, all the fees involved as well as any incentives being offered. Mr. Latesta then told me that Gunther doesn't provide lease worksheets since there were too many details involved. He said customers use lease worksheets to shop dealerships and instead he would negotiate the best deal with his manager Yogi. Regarding incentives, I was told that I didn't qualify for any. He then asked me what monthly payment I was comfortable with. I replied, I'd rather work through the math of the lease before blurting out what monthly payment I was comfortable with. He left the room to converse with his manager Yogi and returned with a "monthly payment range". I immediately asked if the price included sales tax or reflected any fees or a down payment. He answered with, give me a price range that works and I'll work with my manager to get you what you want. At that point I gave him a price and he asked what out of pocket money I was willing to come up with. My reply was, "as little as possible". After another 45 minutes of back and forth with his manager, I clearly saw that I was not going to get all the answers to what #s were behind the monthly lease price until I was passed over to finance. We did agree upon a monthly payment which he said included the sales tax and an out of pocket amount of $1,388. I was then walked over to a different building (Gunther Volkswagen) to meet with someone in finance to go over the paperwork. I'm guessing the finance person at the other building was busy. I waited for another 40 minutes before I made it into his office. His name was Miguel. He presented me with the lease agreement which reflected a monthly payment that was $30/mo. higher than the price I agreed to. I also noticed that the amount due at signing was $1,853. When I asked why it was different, I was told that the $1,388 didn't include the first payment which needed to be collected up front. I knew that the first payment is normally paid up front, but when someone tells me the total out of pocket is $1,388, that price includes everything. At that point Miguel called Mr. Latesta, who walked back over to the finance office and said, "you agreed on the monthly lease price, what's the problem?" I indicated the monthly payment he quoted did not include sales tax like he originally said, and the out of pocket price didn't include the first payment. Mr. Latesta then pulled out a piece of paper where he had scratched some notes while we had been negotiating and said, "See here, this is the price we talked about." I agreed and replied, "of course it is, that's the price you told me was the monthly payment which included the tax." At that point Mr. Latesta said he had negotiated the best deal he could with his manager Yogi who had been very generous and was not making any money on the deal, simply moving a unit. I was now approaching 2 1/2 hours at the dealership and was getting weary. I finished going through the paperwork with Miguel (who was very patient and courteous), but realized the acquisition fee was very high. I also noticed there was an electronic filing fee (what??). Bottom line, the experience would have been so much smoother if I would have received the lease worksheet that I requested at the beginning. Transparency is so important when leasing a car. There are too many moving parts. Gunther uses what I consider an older style selling technique that keeps you in the dark until the very end. Don't get me wrong, Mr. Latesta was not rude or short, he just didn't provide the information I needed up front. I guess this is more reflective of the management since I'm sure they set the tone of how the sales staff negotiates and finesses the sale. More
