When I came to Haddad Hyundai, I already knew the car I wanted, and it was on their lot. The buying experience wasn’t the greatest. Being an out-of-state buyer was a huge hassle, as there were added issues wanted, and it was on their lot. The buying experience wasn’t the greatest. A total of three trips were made to Pittsfield, including to pick up the car. During one of these visits, my driver’s license was not returned to me. I did not realize it until returning home. Jesse said it was left on the table, but I took everything that was in front of me. This may be conjecture on my part, but I suspect this was intentional, to force me to return to the dealership in case I changed my mind. Though I had already arranged financing with my own bank at a 4.99 rate, Jesse implored via text that they can take care of financing at the same rate, and if they couldn’t match it, then go ahead and do it with my own bank. I agreed. Chris, who was handling the financing, tried to “nicely” pressure me to take their financing with Greylock at a 5.1 rate, but I would not bite at it. Then he came back with a 4.99 rate from another bank, which I agreed to. I had done my homework on the figures involved - financing $20,000 over 60 months comes to $377 and change a month, but Chris kept saying it was $380 and change. When I was ready to write my down-payment check, the figure I was looking at with tax etc. came to $25,073.22, so I wrote Haddad a check for $5,073.22, leaving a balance of exactly $20,000 to be financed - or so I thought. Then came the day to pick up the car. Jesse greeted me with a handshake and the keys to the car. He offered to hook up my IPhone, but I declined, as I was on the verge of getting a new one. About a day or so later, I realized that there was no paperwork whatsoever. The owner’s manual and additional info regarding that was in the glovebox. I called on a Tuesday and spoke to someone in financing I believe, who told me that they will look into it and someone will get back. When no one contacted me by Thursday, I texted Jesse about it. He said that hard copies of all the paperwork are done by customer request, but normally the files are e-mailed. He suggested that maybe something was wrong with my address, but I’ve had it for years and it works just fine. The paperwork was finally sent - five days after getting the car. I was shocked to see that the amount financed was $20,150. The $150 extra is a mandatory insurance charge imposed by the bank they chose for me - NBT. The $380+ monthly payment that Chris insisted on, was actually for financing $20,150 - not $20,000. He may’ve been reluctant to mention the insurance charge for fear that I wouldn’t take their financing, and would go back and do it with my own bank. This is again conjecture on my part, but I suspect that the paperwork was kept from me purposely so that I wouldn’t notice the added charge. I called Jesse about it, and he said that he conferred with the sales and financing people to make sure something like this never happens again. Sure. Who pays $25,000 for something and doesn’t get paperwork sent, even after calling about it. Chris Calaf, who handled the financing, according to the company website, is the “Sales Manager.” I am a bit older and have an easy-going way about myself, which may’ve given these people the impression that I am a pushover and a gullible fool. I made three trips from Albany to buy this car, and did not deserve this. Maybe, just maybe, they will think twice before trying these tactics on someone else. More
