i went to Davis to look at a car they advertised on line. The car was only $2,000, and I understand you can't ask for a lot at that price, but when I took it for a test drive I noticed the check engine light The car was only $2,000, and I understand you can't ask for a lot at that price, but when I took it for a test drive I noticed the check engine light was on. In NJ you cannot pass inspection with the engine light on, and the car must be inspected within 30 days of purchasing. I told the salesman that it could be a loose gas cap ($0)or a broken transmission ($3000), or anything in between, so could he tell me why the light was on. The used car manager came over and explained that the car was being sold "as is" and he was not going to put any money into it. I said I wasn't asking them to fix the problem, just to scan the computer, (which would cost nothing) and tell me what was the cause. "I pay my mechanics $100 an hour!" was his reply. I said I would never buy a car from a dealer who wouldn't take 30 seconds to tell me why the check engine light was on (I'm sure they had scanned it when they acquired the vehicle, and knew exactly why it was on.) He said we would never sell you a car, so I walked out. This is no way to treat a potential customer. More
