They'll Waste Your Time and Low-ball Your Trade-In My son is looking for a new car, going to trade his. We arrive and met by a nice sales person very willing to help. "We do things differently here. We My son is looking for a new car, going to trade his. We arrive and met by a nice sales person very willing to help. "We do things differently here. We'll appraise your trade-in, take some information, then discuss options and what fits your budget." We told him half a dozen times what our monthly payment limit was. He took down quite a bit of information - employment history, SSN - all the things to imply a pre-qualify for financing. And he had someone look at the trade-in. An hour later he says he found the car that will work for us. Took my son on a a test drive of a brand new car. Wow, ok, maybe they have some options. We get back and he brings a sales manager over. This guy, whose name I cannot recall, asks the same questions we've already answered - obviously the salesman told him nothing. So the sales manager says, no way can we make that payment, in fact on a new car you're probably looking at $400 a month. We've already done our homework and I even showed him a loan calculator result that put the payment around $250. He described something about their financing without really explaining why they couldn't get to that payment. He asked about the trade-in and if we knew what it was worth. Yes, we did our homework - could sell for 4000 or 45000, trade-in around 3000. We still did not have a price on the new car nor value of the trade-in. So I asked. "Well, i don't know" So I explained my frustration about being there an hour, not getting any real information, answering questions again and asked what they've been doing for an hour. No real answer, but instead "Can I get you those answers and we can still shake hands and walk away friendly?" Sure..... The car will be discounted around 2,000 and they'll give us 1,000 for the trade-in. Talk about a slap in the face. Wasted my time. Wasted their time. Didn't even act like they wanted to deal. Didn't even offer options in terms of used cars instead of new car. What really iced the cake was the owner's McClaren setting on the showroom floor and then he drove off in his really slick Rolls Royce. Guess enough people out there are getting sucked into the higher-payment trap so he can afford his exotic rides. Go ahead if you must, but plan on spending a few hours, answering the same questions multiple times, and getting low-balled on your trade-in. More
