Exceptionally Good Experience With BRZ Engine Work and More This review gets into some details that may be of more interest to car guys/gals, so bottom line up front - Ganley's Service Advisor (Ray Korflage) an This review gets into some details that may be of more interest to car guys/gals, so bottom line up front - Ganley's Service Advisor (Ray Korflage) and the Technician who did the engine work (Kilby) know their jobs extremely well AND have the desire to see that every aspect of the service work was done to near perfection. Kudos as well to Will Gearhart, the Subaru Service Director, and to any other techs who may have worked on the BRZ that I did not meet. I had high expectations, and some big concerns going in since the engine had to be pulled from "my baby" to do the major work, but Ganley Westside Subaru came through with flying colors - I would recommend them to anyone without reservation. Here is why we're here. My 2013 BRZ was involved in the valve spring factory recall. Subaru out of an abundance of caution issued the recall after a number of years and a small number of failures. If a valve spring breaks it can do serious internal damage to the FA20 engine. I had only about 7800 miles on the car and it was in mint condition, so pulling an engine and cracking it open when the car was running great is not an easy decision and is a subject of great debate in the online BRZ/FRS enthusiast community. I learned that Ganley Westside does about 10 of these valve spring replacement jobs a week and the master techs that are specially trained have gotten very good at it. I asked if it was possible to see the FA20 engine once it was on the engine stand and the timing chain cover and valve covers were off. Ray walked me over to meet Kilby and I had the chance to ask a few questions and then let them get on with the work. In 99% of the cases, techs don't appreciate customers looking over their shoulders and it can be counterproductive to their ability to do the best job possible since you can interrupt their concentration. And, of course, they are not being paid to chat with the owners. Kilby and I discussed the process by which he would ensure ALL of the old packing was removed, the issue with oil seeping back onto the sealing surfaces and how he prevented that, the timing chain cover locations that were most critical to ensure a perfect seal, the oil passages that are close to the sealing surfaces that require extra special care not to deviate from the tolerances describing resealing the covers, and how Subaru has developed a better liquid gasket material than what was used in the original engine manufacture. I wanted to keep it short and to the point out of respect for their time. If my experience is an indicator, you can trust that your engine will be repaired right to the first time and you don't need or want to worry about it. And Kilby is a great guy - I'm glad I met him. Super professional! I said there was more, as if having your car's engine pulled, opened up and then reinstalled wasn't enough. There was a TSB, Technical Service Bulletin, for a design flaw in the tail light assemblies that allowed water and condensation to get in. I had the extended warranty for the BRZ since it was the first model year when I bought it. While the car was in for the valve spring recall, Ganley replaced the tail lights under warranty and they are a new design that is better than new. Finally, an annoying rattle from around the radio in the dash was located and fixed. Again, not a scratch or smudge anywhere to be found. Perfect attention to detail and care for the customer's car like it was their own. Thanks to Ray for keeping me in the loop via phone and in person during the entire process and to the techs who are the heroes in this story for doing the quality level repair work the way I would have done it myself - if only I had the skills, knowledge, experience and specially designed tools! Just kidding, I could not have done this job. Thanks again for a great experience. Highly recommended. More
