Mr. Elliot, My name is Michael Pampena and I am the General Manager of Monroeville Kia Mazda. I want to start by appologizing for the way you felt you were treated. Our goal is to make sure everyone leaves completely sattisfied weather they purchase a vehicle or are just starting to shop. I spoke with the salesperson who helped you out and asked him what happened. He stated that when you came in that you had stated you were looking for a CX-7 AWD with a leather interior. Sometime during the conversation the question of budget came up. By his interpetation of the conversation, he said you were looking for a payment of $200 per month with $0 down payment out of pocket and trading your 2001 Toyota Celica. His goal was to show you vehicles that you liked and that was in your budget. Anthony stepped away for breif period of time to run the numbers through the computer and come up with a vehicle that would fit your requested budget and vehicle needs and wants. It sounds like there was a communication gap on what you wanted to look at, your budget you wanted to spend and what Anthony's inturpetation was. I would like you to give me a call to see if I can personally help with your transportation needs. The night you came in Tom Dean had to leave early unexpectedly and I again appologize for this. If you and I set an appointment, I can assure you I will be available. My best contact number is 412-856-2100 ext "0" and have me paged. Thank you for your time, Michael Pampena General Manager

Mr. Elliot, I had responded to your Dealerater review to attept to communicate with you about your experience. I would like to think we strive for 100% customer satisfaction during the purchase of a new or preowned vehicle. You and your sales person were obviously not on the same page as far as what you were looking for. You had told him during the course of your conversation that you wanted to spend $200 per month with no down payment. This is the reason he showed you a 6 year old vehicle. Only thing I can think of is that you gave him a false budget of $200 per month to start the negotoations low. The vehicle you liked was not near what you had stated you wanted to spend. I appologize on behalf of the company on the way you felt you were treated. Anthony may have made a mistake based on the information you gave him, he is only human. Thank you in advance for your response, Michael Pampena

Dear Michael, I appreciate the response although I am a bit troubled by the failure to acknowledge some of the more pressing issues. This had little to do with my price range and much to do with the overall experience. First, if I am going to do any negotiating with a manager, I would expect the manager to at least pay me the courtesy of an introduction, which failed to happen that evening. Instead, some pseudo-mediation process occurred where Anthony apparently acted like a go-between. The manager introduced himself to me at every other dealership I visited. Second, the price of the vehicle for its year, mileage, and features was grossly overinflated. On the one hand, if you purchased it at an auction or accepted it as a trade-in and spent more than $14,000 for it, then you wasted your money. Of course, I understand that a business must make a profit as well, but with my vehicle alone, you could have profited $2,000 easily (which is what in fact did happen once I traded it in to another dealership; it was sold in 2 days with a $2,000 profit, that is, after calculating the amount given to me for a trade, tax, title, and fees). On the other hand, if you are going to offer it at such a high price, did not in fact overpay for it, and tell me that it is non-negotiable (which is what was said to me), then you are cheating your customers. Third, you failed to consider me a long-term investment given my age (29), a potential repeat customer who would also send his wife there who will be shopping for a car soon and who would strongly recommend any friends. I can be quite persuasive. Fourth, given that my situation lacked any sense of urgency considering the reliability and condition of my vehicle, I took my time and visited seven different dealerships. I regret to inform you that yours was the poorest in terms of the customer experience. This was the only dealership where no one took the time to even appraise or even look at my vehicle. In addition, a sales person should make every effort to remain by his customer's side, but I was left on three different occasions. Anthony seems like a nice young man who is trying to do his best as a sales person, and perhaps it is the fault of management putting too much pressure on him in terms of monthly goals and / or the general structure of the business prohibiting him from having a sufficient degree of freedom to discuss prices, but he needs to learn to make it less about the sale and more about developing a relationship with his customer and he needs to feel free to negotiate prices on his own. Three dealerships I had visited had given the sales person a bottom number towards which they could allow their customers to negotiate, and if it went any lower, then they needed to seek permission from the manager. I thought this was a fine way to handle the process. I am sure that in most cases, consultation of the manager would not even be necessary since many customers would not get much lower. You may want to consider adopting this strategy at your own dealership though I do not intend to sound patronizing in my recommendation and hope you do not consider it as such. All things considered, I can entertain the idea that perhaps I visited on the wrong evening. After all, in everything that we do, some days will be better than others. I hope that if I choose to visit this dealership again in the future, things will be different. Thank you for you time. Best Regards, Derek Elliott
