We arrived at the dealership at approximately 11:30 AM. I had already sought an auto loan with Capital One, afraid that I didn't have a high enough credit score to qualify for a good APR at dealerships - it's a bit over 700 - so, I was going to use this loan as a bargaining point, to see if I could get lower rates. If not, then fine, I was okay with the 5.5% at Capital One. Anyway, we're at the dealership, and we ask to speak with the internet Sales Rep, whom I've been emailing regarding the Touring SE--Anne-Marie. She's lovely and nice, and so we think this is going to be a good experience, especially after she hands us over to our sales person Frank, who takes us for our test drive. Frank was awesome! He was honest, polite, and friendly, and he negotiated with the manager at every point we wished him to, during haggling. Frank was the brightest point of our whole encounter! Read on for the horror. Red Flag #1: The first price Frank came back with, from what we assumed was the sales manager, was ABOVE THE STICKER PRICE of the vehicle--nearly $2,000 more. Red Flag #2: I had to pull up the email from Anne-Marie, the internet Sales Rep, for them to even entertain honoring the Internet price I was quoted. They didn't believe me otherwise. Thank goodness for smart phones. Red Flag #3: Each time I pointed out that I thought the price was too high, Frank would say it's because the price is only lowered by Hyundai's Rebate structure. To get the rebates, you need to qualify for them, so if you don't, you can't get the low price--EVEN IF IT WAS QUOTED TO YOU WITH NO MENTION OF REBATES. (Also, I took a picture of the sticker on the car, and even there, to get to the sticker price, it does not itemize Hyundai Rebates). Red Flag #4: They really didn't want me to use my Capital One financing--they insisted that they could get me a better APR, therefore qualifying me for a $500 Hyundai Rebate that "they would chase down from Hyundai" so they pushed and pushed me to let them try to get me the 1.9%, and when I agreed, Frank came back to me, after talking to what we assumed was the sales manager, and said: We have a deal! This price at 1.9% and shook my hand. Yeah right. If only. No deal. Because as soon as I was finished with wonderful Frank, we met with Sammy Khadka, the Business Manager. He was polite and friendly, at first, but the very second--it was almost amusing how transparent his change in attitude was--that I declined purchasing extra warranties beyond what came with my new Hyundai, he became more blunt, aggressive, and dismissive. My friend and I noticed it, independent of one another. And that 1.9% interest that I had shook on, and made a deal on? Including the price? I wasn't getting approval for, so Sammy had to talk to Hyundai's finance office. In the mean time, he continued to aggressively try to sell us extended warranty packages using insulting, condescending language and statements. While we were waiting on hold with Hyundai's Finance dept., he asked me repeatedly if I would allow my friend who was accompanying me to co-sign on the loan, then there'd be no problem, at all. I flatly refused, immediately. I don't have co-signer horrible credit or salary! After about 45 minutes in his office, he asked us to wait outside so he could assist other customers. And so we did. Finally, he came over and said that Hyundai Finance would need to wait until Monday, because one of their Managers wasn't in to approve the APR rate. Then, he asked again about co-signing, and when I said no for the third time, he SPOKE OVER ME, and asked my friend (WHO IS A CO-WORKER), directly, "How would you feel about co-signing?" This was not his place! And I told him that--also stating that it was insulting, and he told me, "Oh, you don't need to feel insulted, I don't mean it this way." To which I replied, "I know I don't need to feel insulted, but I am insulted." At last, we agreed to leave and wait until Monday to hear the finance decision. In the meantime, I looked up the Yelp reviews and negative reviews here on dealerrater.com, in which Clay Hyundai's true colors are as vivid as vivid can be. And it's all completely true. I was fixated on the car I wanted--not the customer service, so I should have left. Today, I went to Rt. 2 Hyundai and purchased a vehicle for $1,000 less than what I was getting it from Clay Hyundai and NOT ONCE WERE REBATES MENTIONED. They not only saw that Capital One was going to give me the best APR (because I don't have a previous auto loan) but they helped me get it directly through the dealership, so it was a faster process than using the blank check Capital One sent to me. The kicker, of course, is that I would have used Capital One at Clay Hyundai, except they were so focused on the rebates that they made me feel that I had to get Hyundai Financing for the best price. And, as it turns out, even had I got Hyundai Financing and their precious $500 rebate, it wouldn't have been the best price. THE REAL HORROR: I called Sammy Khadka at CLAY HYUNDAI today to instruct him to cease all process towards attaining financing and selling me the car, as I bought a car from another dealership, and he got angry with me. Aggressively angry. He was yelling at me into the phone, and he said that it's finished, that I couldn't cancel the sale, and then he said that I had left a deposit. I'd done no such thing, nor had I signed anything committing me to purchasing a car. I told him that he was rude and he continued to yell at me. I hung up. THEN HE CALLED BACK to ask what he could do to close the sale, and I said, he couldn't, that I was finished with the dealership, and then he started yelling at me again, telling me that he spent hours of his time with me and was going to get paid for that. He threatened to sue me, to take me to court, and stated that he didn't care if he lost his job, that he was pissed. He was literally yelling and swearing at me over the phone. I hung up and called the dealership back and asked the receptionist if I could speak to Sammy Khadka's immediate supervisor. The receptionist said yes and transferred me, and guess who was on the line? Sammy, and when I asked, "Is this Sammy's Supervisor?" He answered, "Yes." And then I said, "Is this Sammy" and he replied, "Yes, who is this?" BUYER BEWARE. Any dealership that hires Sammy Khadka as their closer embraces dishonesty, aggressiveness, and unprofessionalism as core values. You're just money to them, and if you walk away, because of how they treat you, you'll be who they blame for their loss sale. More
