I bought a car last October and had an amazing experience doing so. The first time it broke down was less than a month after I got it, and I had to replace the engine. That engine lasted me all of six mo doing so. The first time it broke down was less than a month after I got it, and I had to replace the engine. That engine lasted me all of six months before the timing chain broke so badly that I ended up not being able to just replace the part, but instead had to get ANOTHER new engine (which the warranty made me shell out for because the timing chain is under maintenance, even though the thing they replaced in the end was the engine, which is far more expensive and definitely covered). The dealership did not have a loaner car available when that happened (but they had my car for weeks, so that whole experience was a hassle and a half), nor did they have one available when the battery died a few months later (which I'm not mad at them for. Batteries die and that's no one's fault. However, the fact that I got a car whose engine lasted all of 20 days, only to have them replace it with an engine that didn't even make it a full year is ridiculous). At this point I have near exhausted my warranty and spent thousands on repairs, rideshares, and rental cars. My car has either broken down or refused to start four times in the single year since I got it, and I've been to the dealership to have it repaired three. This is unacceptable for something that cost me thousands of dollars (not only to buy, but also to constantly be fixing). I could've gotten something for $2500 off of FB marketplace with less problems. I go to pick up my car and am assured that the checks were thorough and this battery is under warranty which means, unlike the engine they installed, it should last a year and be replaced for free if it doesn't. Not that I ever got to use it, because I am literally pulling out of the dealership from picking up my car with the new battery when I hear a noise. I guess the checks weren't so thorough, because the driveshaft is suddenly broken and they want a grand to fix it. At this point I'm over it. I just want a new car, and I know I'm going to struggle trading it into another dealership (because I and my family are sold on never wanting to work with RH ever again) as it's barely drivable and there is constantly, constantly something wrong with it. I hope to God they don't try to fool another poor sucker into buying it. They agree that at this point it's probably for the best to just wash my hands of it, which is what friends and family have been telling me to do for ages. So I ask about my options for trading it in and they rattled off some cars and pushed one in particular (the one I have now). The whole meeting I felt so pressured: I remember feeling whiplash when my salesman announced he was going to go get the papers for me to sign because I honestly couldn't recall saying I was buying. But then, I also couldn't figure out what other options I had. I literally had to excuse myself to the bathroom to cry because I had been through so much with this car and was six months ahead on my payments and did everything right, and now I was being told my monthly payments would double, I had negative equity, and I had to put down a deposit that was going to drain my savings to make up for it. As I sat, venting to my dad about how I wasn't going to have a savings or money for groceries after this, and I was going to need to pick up a third job to recover from the entire experience, the salesperson and finance officer inserted themselves in to tell me about how I should be grateful and that I wouldn't be so upset if I stopped to consider the burdens of poor children in Mexico. As a Black woman in Minnesota who was about to make a deal that would leave her with a total of $23 after she covered her rent and other expenses for the month, the last thing I needed was two white men in my face asking "you think I want to be working here at 9pm? That's how it is sometimes." But whatever. I get out of the dealership, I have the car (which I don't like as much as my old car despite the fact that it was twice the cost, so should in theory by nicer), but at least this one has a lifetime warranty. I should mention at this point that I bought the car when it was dark and rainy. SO imagine my surprise when the next morning I see there are stains on the carpet and in two separate places on the seat in the back, as well as above one of the seatbelts, not to mention what appear to be burn marks on the front driver's seat and the ceiling. None of this was mentioned when I bought the car, and I get it. Car salesmen are notoriously slick, and I'm not stupid. I felt the entire time I was in the dealership that they saw me as an easy mark. But then again, maybe I am stupid because I let myself be pressured into a car I'm not even all that happy with. When I pointed out one of the marks later, I was told that the car had been fully detailed, and any marks were stains that couldn't be removed. At this point, I'm hoping to only drive this car until I move or else save up enough money to trade it in for something I want at another dealership. I am glad for the lifetime powertrain and carwashes and will take advantage of them both so that I can keep my car in the best condition possible so that eventually, I can sell it or trade it in for the best value and never have to deal with Rapids Honda again.
