I had high hopes for this dealership and was set on buying a car from them since the initial information I was given by Shawn Portman assured me they would have the make of the car I wanted, however, buying a car from them since the initial information I was given by Shawn Portman assured me they would have the make of the car I wanted, however, I was deeply disappointed by their lack of transparency, consistency in information, and lack of respect towards me. It started out well. Shawn Portman was eager to make a sale and agreed to call with me to discuss details on two cars that were pending to arrive on the lot later that weekend. I told him I preferred the car that would be arriving soonest and because he seemed trustworthy enough on the phone, I agreed to putting down a $500 deposit down to reserve the pending car to me. I gave him my information over the phone and he told me the car would arrive by Monday the latest. We completed this call on Wednesday. After we hung up, I also emailed Shawn asking to see the first pencil of the deal and asked what documents were required for the college rebate. He answered my questions about documentation but evaded my request for the pencil, and ignored my follow up email reiterating my request. Monday came and he texted me early that morning to say the car I had put down $500 for was no longer available. He told me a different car had come through instead and insisted through several texts I came the same day to see it. Five minutes before I arrived, he texted me to say the car would not be ready until Tuesday. I arrived on Monday anyway to discuss financial details of the car because, as I said, I was determined to buy the make of the car I wanted with them since they insisted they would have what I was looking for, and to see the first pencil since Shawn continued to ignore my request. On arrival, another salesman sought out Shawn but since Shawn was with another customer, he asked Jason, the inventory manager to speak with me. I will say Jason was in a difficult position being a middleman for a deal he had not started. Even so, my direct questions about APR rates, college rebate documentation, and a drafted pencil were not well-received. It went so far as to deny knowing what a pencil was. Under other circumstances, Jason would be an agreeable person to know. Since I am a first time buyer for a car, I enlisted my friend who is in the car industry to help me with navigating this process as it is a very overwhelming process, and she and Jason spoke over the phone to negotiate a deal for me. We settled on a drafted deal but since the vehicle was not on the lot, I left and both Jason and Shawn insisted the vehicle would be ready Tuesday, the following day. On Tuesday, I arrived around a similar time and upon arrival I asked for Shawn who received me with, “didn’t Jason tell you? The car is not ready yet. He was supposed to tell you.” No one had communicated to me earlier that day that the car was not ready. He followed up with this to ask, “do we have a deal though?” To which I was surprised by the frankness of, and replied, “I’m leaning towards it.” I did not feel comfortable saying yes, as I had also sent Shawn an email earlier that day asking he send the monroney sticker for me to view and I still had not seen the car nor test driven. His response was, “‘you’re leaning towards it?’ That’s not a ‘yes’ or ‘No’ answer. That’s not what I’m asking you.” His pushy and disrespectful response caught me and my partner who was with me, off guard. I did not immediately respond to him since I wasn’t sure what to say, but after a some time I did tell him in response that I had not seen the vehicle yet and was not comfortable with giving him a definitive answer. He replied with “I’ve got 24 other interested buyers who want this car. Jason said yesterday you were wavering. I need to know.” I was unsure how to reply, so I asked if I could see the monroney sticker for the car, to which he at first said “wasn’t sure what that was,” but then went to the back desk to “see what [he could] do.” This is half of what happened.
