Suspension Recall & Upgrade Replacing the recalled rear leaf spring stack went very smoothly, and adding the Timbren Tortun4L progressive urethane bumper, instead of the stock ru Replacing the recalled rear leaf spring stack went very smoothly, and adding the Timbren Tortun4L progressive urethane bumper, instead of the stock rubber bumper, to the new 4-leaf stack seems to have greatly stabilized traction and helped dramatically with cornering and load stabilization. While slightly stiffer than the original stock rear suspension, this former 3-leaf spring stack seemed far too soft, making it difficult to maintain traction, even on loose gravel and on snow with cable chains. The Tacoma Prerunner before would just bounce and dig a hole to become stuck in both circumstances. I also noted that with loading, say with household items while moving, the former rear suspension compressed raising the headlight beaming angle, which put even dimmed lights in the eyes of oncoming traffic. This coincided with rubbing of the stock bumpers on the bottom of the frame underneath the cargo bed, which rubbed off enough paint to expose bare metal on the bottom of the frame. I believe urethane bumpers have been used in both the GMC Sierra and the Chevrolet Silverado, so this new suspension combination in my Tacoma Prerunner should be very interesting, indeed.. I'll be looking at positioning and the clearance recommended by Timbren for this new combination, especially with regard for Timbren's recommendations for installation to the stock leaf springs and the new 4-leaf stack. The proof is in the pudding, though, so ultimately I will evaluate the balance of improved traction, load and weight distribution, sway, and ride, but I'm encouraged so far with the results. More
