This past November I bought a new 2020 Honda Odyssey EX-L from Tamaroff Honda in Southfield and I regret it. It’s a great vehicle, but I’ll never visit or recommend that dealership to anyone. (By the way, I also paid extra for the “towing package.” More about that deception later.) I was considering a 2017, or 2018, to replace my 2010 Odyssey, but friends suggested that I get a 2020. Rebates, financing deals, and according to the salesman, “the 2020 has all the new safety features.” Except parking assist sensors, as I have come to learn. The vehicle does have a lot of nice features: lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, blind spot sensors, back-up camera, rear cross-traffic sensors, etc…. Needless to say, I was very confused when I couldn't figure out how to turn on the parking assist sensors, and even more upset to find out that it is not on this vehicle. This is NOT why I am upset with this dealership. This was completely my fault for not confirming that this was included with this vehicle. At first I looked in the manual, and online, then ultimately called Honda’s 800# to speak with someone there to help me figure out how to turn it on, or tell me what I was doing wrong. The representative told me there’s a button on the dash to turn it on, but there is no button. Even he was surprised to hear that, and then after researching it more, told me this is an optional feature, which surprised him as well. When I told the salesman about this, he said that had he known I really wanted that feature, he “would have tried to upsell [me] to the Touring model.” What vehicle these days, especially in this price range, doesn’t come with the parking assist sensors? Even less expensive and older cars have that. It’s certainly my own fault for not asking about it in advance, but then again, I also didn't ask if there were power brakes and air conditioning and cruise control. I sent an email to the President of the dealership asking if there was anything he could do for me. In response I received a call from the General Sales Manager. I was told that it’s $1,100 to have the factory system installed. Again, I asked if there was anything else he could do. That’s when he offered to install the system “at dealer cost” for $300. I thought that was very fair, though I thought it was strange when he said it only comes in black and it would be another $100(?) to match the color of my vehicle. A friend asked me “Is this the factory system he’s going to install?” (The one that will integrate with the infotainment system?) I assumed that it was, because that’s what we were discussing all along. But after incorrectly assuming things before, I asked the manager and was told “These will be aftermarket sensors” and “It does not integrate with the factory system or infotainment screen.” I was livid. Why? Because I checked several local shops and they’ll all install an aftermarket system for $300. Or I can buy an aftermarket system on Amazon for $35, install it myself, or pay someone else to install it, and that includes back and front sensors! So, he was going to substitute a cheap aftermarket system for a factory original system, and not tell me until I asked, all under the guise of doing me a ‘favor’ and only charging me his “dealer cost.” For the record, the genuine Honda factory system, which includes the control module and four rear sensors (in any color, not just black!) can be purchased online for approximately $375 (parts only), and I’m sure his dealer cost is less than that. At this point I decided I didn’t want or trust them to install anything. THIS is why I am upset with this dealership. This borders on bait-and-switch. But there’s more. Now, about that “towing package” that was to be installed, the one I mentioned in the first paragraph. They originally wanted an additional $1,500 for that. I thought that was quite expensive, especially since I installed a hitch and light connector on my old Odyssey for less than a fifth of that price. The salesman agreed to lower the price to ‘only’ $1,175, and told me that it includes a transmission cooler. I figured that’s important, and this would be a dealer installation, covered by the warranty, factory original parts, etc… so I agreed to have it all done by them, but they had to order the parts. When they notified me that the hitch arrived I was in the process of asking about the parking sensors, so I thought I would have it all installed at the same time. When I decided not to be swindled on the parking sensors, I didn’t immediately go back to them for the hitch installation. I really never wanted to set foot in that dealership again, but I did pay for the hitch, so I suppose I had to. I recently sent an email to the Assistant Service Manager asking when it could be installed. Interestingly, they never bothered to call me prior to this and ask when I wanted the hitch installed. But when I did contact him, he told me the parts had been sent back already (why didn’t anyone ever call me?) and they would have to reorder them. When he notified me that the parts arrived, I dropped off the vehicle for installation. Later that day he emailed to say it was done. Not wanting to assume anything anymore, I asked him, just to confirm, that the transmission cooler was also installed. And that’s when he replied “There is no option to add a transmission cooler on the Odyssey.” That's odd! I was very clearly told and assured when I purchased the “towing package” that it included a transmission cooler. He replied further “The Pilot 5000lb 6 speed and 9 speeds get a trans. cooler. Odysseys have not had a trans. cooler option since 2017.” So I was lied to at the time of the sale. Somehow, I’m not really surprised. I have come to learn that at Tamaroff Honda they’ll say things before the sale that aren’t true, and after the sale is made, they don’t really care about the customer. Messages to the General Manager of the dealership went completely unanswered. Then they tried to sell me an aftermarket parking assist system, instead of the factory system we were talking about, under the guise of ‘doing me a favor’ and installing it “at dealer cost.” Then I grossly overpaid for a “towing package” which I was clearly told includes a transmission cooler, only to find out that it doesn’t. And they didn’t bother calling me to ask when they could install the hitch, instead waiting for me to call them. And if I hadn’t, would they have just kept the money? As I said in the first paragraph, I’ll never visit or recommend Tamaroff Honda to anyone. I highly doubt this is how things would have been handled when Marvin Tamaroff ran the dealership he founded. More
