I am a long-time Toyota owner and have purchased multiple Toyotas over the years, but my recent service experience at Toyota Carlsbad was one of the most disappointing and concerning encounters I've ever had Toyotas over the years, but my recent service experience at Toyota Carlsbad was one of the most disappointing and concerning encounters I've ever had at a Toyota Parts & Service Department. I scheduled an appointment for routine maintenance and a multipoint inspection. When booking the appointment, I specifically explained that I was hearing a noise during a cold start and was advised to leave my car in the early-bird parking the night before, with written instructions for them to cold start the car to identify the issue and cause. I was told the same notes would be added to my service file so technicians could evaluate the engine from a true cold start. The next morning, the service advisor called me--yet when I asked whether the cold-start issue had been checked, he admitted they had not tested it at all. The car had simply been moved into service. I asked him to please have the team evaluate it right away since the engine was still cold, and he said he would call me with findings by 1 PM. I was also charged $90 for this so-called "inspection", despite the fact that the initial and most important part of the inspection--evaluating the cold-start issue--was not performed as instructed. No call ever came. I left a message, texted, and finally had to track him down by calling repeatedly. When I eventually reached him, he informed me that the technicians had supposedly found over $7,000 worth of repairs, including more than $6,100 in engine repairs and an additional $492 for a stabilizer bar, plus the cost of front brakes (the only legitimate item, which I already knew about). He also said he would send me information about a refurbished engine--which never happened. Here's the most troubling part: As part of the basic maintenance, they completed an oil change, topped off the engine oil...and the noise disappeared completely. No repairs were needed. I sought two independent opinions from certified technicians who regularly work on Toyota vehicles after this visit. Both confirmed that the major repairs listed by Toyota Carlsbad were not necessary and that there were no warning lights, no codes, and no indicators to justify their findings. This is not the first time Toyota Carlsbad has attempted to upsell me on unnecessary repairs, but this attempt--to charge over $6,500 for work that was not needed--was infuriating and unacceptable. It is deeply disappointing, unprofessional, and feels predatory. As a loyal, long-term Toyota customer, I expect honesty and integrity. Unfortunately, based on repeated experiences, I can no longer trust Toyota Carlsbad's service department. I strongly recommend seeking a second opinion before agreeing to any repair they recommend. My service yesterday was very thorough, polite, and professional. I only take two stars away because I had scheduled twice now for the recall work to be done, but each time I received a call a day bef professional. They do not reserve the parts once they come in for the people that have scheduled appointments but only a first come first get basis whether you have an appointment or not. They did not offer to call me when more parts come in, so I do not know when to give it a third try. Not a good business practice. I have gone to this dealer for decades for service and have bought four cars with them and have received excellent service. However, their handling of the recall work required for my 2019 Rav4 is unsatisfactory. More
This service center gives excellent customer service. I purchased my truck in 2020 and then moved 2 hrs. from Carlsbad.
