Not what I expected I went to this dealership to find a 4Runner. My sales guy, Nick, introduced me to one that looked pretty good, and we took an extended test drive. W I went to this dealership to find a 4Runner. My sales guy, Nick, introduced me to one that looked pretty good, and we took an extended test drive. We got as far as the horse-trading on the finances, when he came back and admitted an error: it was a RWD, not an AWD!! He was appropriately apologetic. I felt badly for him, but that was a deal-breaker. I was considering a wide range of vehicles besides the 4Runner, including a Subaru Outback, Honda CRV, Mazda CX-5, and even another Jeep Grand Cherokee. Nick got back to me a couple days later letting me know he had just received two 4Runners in stock: a 2017 and a 2018. Turns out the latter is the rare "3rd row" version, but otherwise, both were trimmed out to my specs. Here's where I'll do the pros / cons: Pros: admitting an error and calling me when vehicles matching my interest came in Cons: never a great idea to badmouth the competition brands, particularly the Jeep, which I had already expressed had been one of my favorite vehicles. But Nick is young and seems eager to learn. I'm sure he can be coached appropriately. Anyway, back to the 4Runners; I actually had an appointment at Subaru the following day, and it was looking like the Toyotas were not going to be in line with my price range. Seems like they were being fair on all accounts. Nick then directed me back -- as did the sales manager, Richard -- to thinking about a Rav4, which hadn't really been on my radar (nor, for that matter, the Highlander). But Nick took me out and showed me one. It was really nice! No leather, no heated seats, no Apple Play...but all the safety features, a really stand-out cloth seat color pattern, and flawless bodywork. We took a short test ride, and I was impressed. We went back to horse-trading, and they met most of my conditions, including throwing in a tow hitch. On to the finance manager. Mind you, it was nearing 9:30 pm by this time, and I will take ownership of what happened next. Namely, I had negotiated a rate that was quite favorable. I hadn't intended on getting an extended warranty -- all the mags and pundits say not to, that they will never pay for themselves, but the terms actually did seem pretty favorable -- but I added it in. Unfortunately, what I didn't realize until after things were signed, is that because I extended the number of months on the terms, the rate increased by a percentage point plus. Not very keen on that, but the monthly payment was at my limit, so I talked myself into taking it. Most likely, I'm going to shop loans to reduce the rate. I will say that Nick, Andre (? -- finance guy...it was late, he didn't have a card, and my brain was tired), and Richard were all really pleasant to work with. One last thing: I discovered a screw in my right rear tire the next day (or day after). Ugh! Nearly new tires. Both Toyota -- who I was able to get in to see right away, though the woman I worked with was "on loan" from the Mercedes side of the house, and Discount Tire claimed that due to the position of the screw, the tire could not be plugged or patched safely. I did ask - and Nick did return my call -- whether I was covered and/or whether there was anything they could do given I had *just* made the purchase, but no joy. Bummer. Out a couple hundred bucks for a tire, but DT also sold me a discounted hazard plan on all 4 of my tires, so it is what it is. All in all, I'm mostly pleased with the experience, as outlined. I would likely have argued for a better rate even with the extended warranty, and maybe pushed a bit harder on the tire, but none of those things will cause me to lose sleep. I would definitely recommended Toyota of Bellingham. Oh, and the reason I chose the Rav4 was also on account of 1) a plethora of friends who own or have owned them and speak glowingly about them, 2) their safety record, and 3) a real transmission vs the yet-undetermined quality of the CVT transmissions.
