Toyota / Mercedes of Bellingham tops my list of worst experience. I never write reviews. After getting a very "happy" email from them suggesting I write one, I decided to comply. I've brought my vehicle in for 3 different service issues. In each case, the service was either incomplete or mis-diagnosed. My latest problem with the vehicle (which has been largely problem free for 6 years) arose immediately following a service visit to repair some problems with the electro-mechanicals on the passenger door. Not only did I have to return immediately (as the door ajar signal was on) to have it completed, but I then experienced battery drain. I was told that the load was "in spec" and that my 18-month old $250 battery was at fault - as it was not Mercedes branded - and was charged $535 to have a Mercedes battery dropped in. I explained that there had been no problems for 6 years with 5-10 days of no driving (with this, or any car I've ever owned) and suspected that there was a ground problem or some system not shutting down. New battery? Same problem. In fact, after the 4th or 5th time I had recharged it (and finally had time to deal with them again) it would not re-charge - my charger reported it had sulfated. I jumped the vehicle and brought it in. Was told that the problem was that I was not driving it enough (only 180 miles in 4 months) and that I needed it on a battery tender. I explained that the low miles was due largely in part with the fact that IT WOULDN'T START because the battery was dead. I also challenged that a brand new $535 Mercedes battery should be able to handle 4-5 months with 180 miles. I inquired about the cars on the lot (certainly most with <180 miles in 4 months, same weather) and was told that they were "started every week" which kept them charged (Internet research suggests that idle on most vehicles is insufficient to overcome the loss of cranking the engine to begin with). I went on to explain that this brand new, $535 Mercedes battery would not hold a charge for 5 days in a 45 degree garage and still believed that there was a problem with the door work, or possibly the seat control units (again). They replaced the battery with a new one (so I was told, did not confirm). 3 days later the vehicle exhibited a number of low-voltage related problems (instrument clusters flashing, error reports, stereo rebooting, headlight flashing on and on). I received no paperwork for that service and have no idea if they ever inspected the door work (as advised) or examined the seat control units or pneumatic pump (which I noted was cycling with high frequency) as potential culprits. All that was explained to me was that it had been "load tested" and that it was in spec and must be a battery issue. With the car now 100 miles from Bellingham (and all of the problems that I've had with them). I prepared a video and wrote a lengthy mail outlining the problems I experienced (now 180 miles in 4 days) with no reply. I augmented that the next day with an update as well as potential culprits I had investigated on the Internet and a few things that I had tried out. No reply. After 48 hours with no response, I brought it to a highly rated independent German auto tech in Seattle. In 15 minutes they determined that the load on the battery was 4x spec and are in the process of examining the different control modules at the "pin level". This newfound electrical issue - new to the day I picked up the vehicle from Bellingham Toyota/Mercedes for the initial door work - is now 5 months old. My vehicle has been completely unusable/unreliable. In 18 months, 3 different service requests - all of them overpriced and incomplete. Even the "free wash" was poorly executed. I'd rather have a dirty car than a car "streaked with clean" after a $1,000+ service. I have had to contact them several times to get status on the repairs as none of the work has been done on the schedule promised. (I did finally get an email response on the 3rd day - after I told them I went elsewhere - explaining that the tech was at school for the week which is why I didn't receive a response.) Poor communication, poor expertise, poor completion, high prices. Complete dissatisfaction. I will never own a Mercedes again, nor will I trust Toyota / Bellingham with any vehicle I own. Extremely disappointed. I hope they use my experience and work orders as a teaching opportunity and case study of precisely what not to do. I'm not a mechanic. Nor did I talk to the mechanic directly. In conclusion, I am fairly confident I would have had better success diagnosing and addressing my problem with YouTube in the O'Reilly's parking lot. More
