2014 Mitsubishi lancer experience for 29 y o single male My 95 bmw325i blew a head gasket last week and I realized I needed a car. This was my 2nd E36 with 200k + miles on it to just go after 1.5 years. This My 95 bmw325i blew a head gasket last week and I realized I needed a car. This was my 2nd E36 with 200k + miles on it to just go after 1.5 years. This made me not want to get a high mileage car at all and definitely made me want a warranty car. My budget was $350 monthly and a $2000 deposit whether it was to finance something or lease or pay $3000 cash used. With that said I was working on a tight budget. So we got to Haltermans, myself and 2 uncles. Started looking around their old lot and someone greeted us right away then he brought a salesman out by the name of Ming. Young guy looks like my Muay Thai trainer Mathew Sobek Semper. He asked me what I was looking for told him I wasn't too sure, a sedan reliable something under $10k so I could put a deposit and finance the rest. Started talking and I realized I may have been out of my comfort zone because he was trying to get me into a car for over $200 a month and I wanted to be under $200 because I had gotten quotes for $150 a month for insurance. So after looking around my options were to lease the frs, scion tc or Mitsubishi lancer that I had been looking at online. I test drove a white Mitsubishi lancer and it had a ridiculous amount of spider web and dust on the car, it was obvious no one was looking at lancers. It felt ok, handles well kinda slow, basic car no fancy features or heated seats. Online lease said $2199 due at signing and $189 a month. So we go inside Ming talks to his manager, Marc, Marc comes in asks me what I'm looking for I told him my budget he goes back in his office comes back with ludacris numbers. $3000 down and $309-$374 a month to name one of the maybe 9 leasing options give or take depending on the deposit down. I told him no. He goes comes back and says what's your max down. I told him $2500 and $225 a month based on what Ming offered. He shakes my hand said done deal for that. Now during the conversations I Ming agreed to 15,000 miles. He said they had a black one that had Bluetooth radio I said I'll take that he said it would probably be $10 more a month I say ok. This is where things get bad. Credit karma which I can stand by says my credit score is 763 I monitor it weekly. They run my credit and turns out experian says its 651. Ming says it shouldn't be an issue but they need an analyst to approve the finance from either Mitsubishi or a bank lender. After like an hour or more we were doing the paperwork and they were detailing the black car. One of the guys from the finance department asks me to come in his office he sits me down and says Mitsubishi doesn't want to do the deal but the bank Ally will finance the deal if I pay $255 a month. I say ok not because I thought I really wanted the car but because at this point I wanted to get out of the place and I realized this was my first major financial commitment after this it would be a house. So fine I take the blow. Go back outside Ming calls my uncle who has nothing to do with my financial decisions nor is he consigning asks to speak with him. My uncle comes back and I ask him what that was about he said they wanted to know if he would cosign if needed he said yes. He didn't have to but the finance guy called me back in the office we're closing the deal after a couple of hours the contract says 12,000 miles and if I wanted more the monthly payments would be more. I say ok sign everything and we go outside and wait an hour for a 3 detail , then Ming pulls it up and we leave. I only saw my car when they pull it up at this point because I switched colors. It took them 3 hours to detail a car and it still had dust in every corner, under the hood, spider webs in door jamb. Overall what I took away was this; Ming was great patient personable and a great salesman. I got the impression he wants to sell cars but doesn't want to force it down the customers throats against what they can afford. He needs to stay there and not change his ethic as a salesman. He also helped me make the whole deal somewhat affordable by calling his insurance guy and getting me insurance for $135 a month when safeco was quoting me $286.Mark shook my hand for a deal and didn't follow through I did not get 15,000 miles nor did I get $225 monthly payments. Don't shake a mans hand and look him in the eyes if you're not going to stick to it. The finance guy in the office was okish seems nice but he didn't call to ask mark if we agreed to 15000 miles a year instead just said your payments would be more. The "detail" crew needs to be fired if it takes 3 hours to detail a car when we went home I opened the hood and the battery terminal was uncovered. I suspect they jumped the car to give it to me because it was just sitting there for so long. What good is a detail crew that doesn't pay attention to detail. At one point they couldn't even find the 2nd key for the car and Ming had to promise to mail it to me after they made one but did find it and chased me driving out the lot to give it to me before I left. Overall, the car is unimpressive for what I'm paying, I personally love the lancer body style so I'm holding onto that feeling for satisfaction. Haltermans focus on selling toyota and scion and maybe considering the lancer had dust all over it could've just been offered at a better deal cause if I didn't take it I'm sure it wouldn't fly out the door. At the end of the day I got a basic new car, went over my budget, spent 6 hours there and have a fully covered warranty car. I didn't get a great deal but I wasn't turned away. I'd recommend this dealership if you're well off. More
