We greatly appreciate your choosing to buy your BMW from us and choosing our dealership to service and to maintain your BMW over the last seven years. We have reviewed the records regarding the oil leak issues with your BMW and we understand your concern. We recognize that it is unwelcome news for us to find additional areas of the engine that are now leaking oil after we repaired an oil leak in September of 2012. As you can imagine, the engine is a complicated piece of machinery with multiple different seals and gaskets that can degrade over time due to normal wear, thereby causing unrelated leaks from different areas of the engine. We did repair the leaking valve cover gasket in September. Since then, however, the engine has developed oil leaks from the oil filter housing gasket and from the oil pan gasket (both distinct from the previously repaired valve cover gasket). As you know, our normal rate to repair these leaks totals $1622. We do greatly value you as a customer and appreciate your returning to our dealership. We would like to offer you a 20% discount on the repair, bringing the total cost down to $1298. We would also make sure you receive a loaner car at no charge to use while we are repairing your vehicle. My understanding is that we did not use a dye to diagnose the first leak because we could see the source of the leak without using a dye. I would ask you not to judge us on the fact that we did not recommend repairing other oil leaks at that time because we onlyrecommended repairing the leak that was clearly an issue at that time. From our perspective, we were trying to limit the amount you would need to pay to correct the issue by repairing the leak that was clearly an issue. If we were not an honest and competent dealership, we could have recommended other repairs that were not necessary in September. Those would have simply cost you more money. Rather, we only recommended further repairs 6 months and about 7000 miles later. It may seem hard to believe, but the condition of a vehicle's engine and other parts can change dramatically in a very short period of time. If you consider a battery as an example, one day it starts fine and then the next day it may not start a car. Furthermore, even if the two additional leaks were evident in September, which we do not believe was the case, waiting six months did not mean that you spent more for the repair. The cost of the repair of all three leaks would not change if we did them all in September or in different service visits. I understand your concern, but you have been a customer for a long time and I am not aware of any other issues or concerns during your time with us.
