Three weeks shy of my brain-injured, school-aged son’s reconstructive throat surgery, my boy began choking. During a lunch break, in the middle of working with West Hill’s Honda’s, Sal Famatid, I panic reconstructive throat surgery, my boy began choking. During a lunch break, in the middle of working with West Hill’s Honda’s, Sal Famatid, I panicked and left. Rattled to the core, I texted Sal about “Going to Tacoma to test drive [another vehicle].” What I didn’t write was “closer to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, just in case.” Back on HWY 16, my child’s breathing settled. And I couldn’t bring myself to cross the Narrow’s Bridge. The reason? In a year of upheaval, Sal is a guy my family trusts. Within the past few months, my kiddo’s third brain-stem-area tumor, and second stroke, had broken me: Week after week of trying to keep his compromised airway free from COVID only added to the stress. With that in mind, Mr. Famatid’s humility and no-pressure sales style was exactly what my wife and I needed. That evening, once my heart rate and respiration slowed, I reached back out to Sal. Even though he was unaware of the full reason for my abrupt exit earlier that day, Famatid patiently worked with me, via repeated texts, to streamline the sales process. By 6:30 p.m., my bride and I (assured our boy was safe) returned to the dealership to close final paperwork on a gently-used Pilot. There WHH employees like Michael and Sera warmly greeted us before our friend, Sal guided us through remaining details. Even after my wife and I repeatedly fended off a different staff member’s stress-producing attempts to have us sign up for an extended warranty (one that my wife and I said “no” to, seven times), Sal was there for us. Mr. Famatid patiently detailed the SUV himself—even getting a small spot of tree pitch off of the hood. Then Sal, despite the late hour, patiently talked us through the modern functions of our clean, safe vehicle: One that we may someday use, To plow through snow, In a medical emergency. By the time my lovely bride and I said goodbye to Mr. Famatid, the 6’2”, 240 lb., longtime rugby player and coach inside me had to hold back from sniffling with gratitude. As my wife and I steered home, I put on some relaxing music. Looking up through our first-ever sun roof, I could not help but think: “Sometimes in life... People just need another human to softly bless them.” Thank you, Sal, For doing that. It means more than you know. More
